Wait! Did you make sure that your wireless light is on before booting into XP? It's the left most light (LED) below your track pad buttons on the laptop.
If it doesn't turn on before bootup, then simply press Fn + F2 while XP is booting and then proceed with install of the drivers. if that doesn't work, then reply again here.

Well, it's possible that your wireless is not turning on upon boot up of XP. Firas_salim sir, you should press Fn + F2 while XP is booting on your computer in order to turn on the wireless and XP should recognize the device and you can install the driver, and you should be able to use it then. Thanks, Tom Anderson

Download the driver from gateway, but when you run the exe file don't forget to add /is. You need to read the readme.txt and you will see that (/is).

Good luck

I reinstalled the driver but still it did not work
It seems to be a hardware problem
Because the Device Manager does not list a wireless adapter at all
So ultimately I either have to replace it or to buy a new external wireless adapter

Thanks for the help

I'm not sure what happened but we got disconnected somehow. What you want to do, seeing as you are using another laptop, is download the software from Gateway and save it onto a cd-rom. Insert the cd rom into the gateway, open the driver and install the driver onto the laptop. This should work. If it doesn't, let me know!

Thanks for your feedback...if you could give me a rating from our chat session, that would be great as well! As far as your problem, if you are still having trouble, please give me some feedback as far as what happened after you reinstalled the driver so I could help you further towards a solution

My internet connection via Ethernet vanishes when i disable my wireless connection. how can i keep this from happening. it's on a old Gateway MX6214 PC Notebook.

Sounds like it's connecting through wireless so when it's switched off, it stops.

Go to 'my computer' if you're using XP and right click, click 'properties'.

Go to hardware, then Device manager.

Look downlown list and choose 'network adaptors'.

See if both wireless and ethernet are working OK. Use properties to check.

Try formatting your partition and also do check whether SATA native mode is enabled in the BIOS if so disable it. Then try reinstalling Clean copy of XP followed by *********** board drivers. I guess this would help...

Plug in an ethernet cable into your ethernet card port on the left hand side of your laptop. When it connects to the internet click on the Windows update icon in the system tray. It should show you a Realtek Wireless RTL8187b wireless adapter driver update. Install it, you may need to reboot, but in any case you will have wireless networks available to you and you can pull out the ethernet cable. Good luck.
