Connect the unit directly to the phone jack (wall), disconnect all other devices using the same phone line (telephones, answering machines only) (if you're on DSL, leave computers, routers connected).
go to faxzero.com and send a fax to your number. this way you'll be able to isolate if it's one of the equipment or a phone provider feature/service such as call forwarding.

Hi my hp 640 will not answer a fax call, but will answer only if we pick up the hand set.

Issue When the all-in-one product is sharing a phone line with voice calls, some calls are interrupted by fax tones. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.Step one: Check the Rings to Answer setting If Auto Answer is enabled, the HP fax product will answer the phone line when the number of rings reaches the number of rings specified in the Rings-to-Answer setting. When voice calls will be received on the same phone line as faxes, set to rings-to-answer to 6. If you do not want the fax to answer automatically, either turn off Auto Answer from the front panel and receive faxes manually (this may result in lost faxes) or subscribe to a distinctive ring service from the phone company (if available). Refer to the Answering faxes manually section below to learn how to answer faxes manually or refer to the Using distinctive ringing section below for more information about using distinctive ringing. The Rings-to-answer setting for the HP Officejet 500 and 600 series products can only be checked or set using the all-in-one software on the computer. For about a couple of days now my fax which is a HP Officejet 5600 all-in-one, it has been showing a message that the phone is off the hook but it is not and it does not allow me to Fax anything. It is...

Plug the phone line directly into the LINE jack on the Officejet. If it works that way, buy a dual adapter and a nother line cord from your local office supply store. This will seperate the Officejet from the cordless phone.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Have to be near fax machine to recieve fax

The Rings to Answer feature might not be set to answer after the
appropriate number of rings for your office setup.
If you have a voice mail service at the same phone number you use
for fax calls, you must receive faxes manually, not automatically. For
information on how to receive faxes manually, see receive a fax
manually from a phone
on page 48.
If you have a PC modem on the same phone line with your
HP Officejet, check to make sure that the modem’s software is not
set to receive faxes automatically. Modems with this auto fax
receive feature turned on will take over the phone line to receive all
incoming faxes, which will prevent the HP Officejet from receiving
fax calls.
If you have an answering machine on the same phone line with
your HP Officejet, you might have one of the following problems:
Your outgoing message might be too long or too loud to allow
the HP Officejet to detect fax tones, and the calling fax machine
might disconnect.
Your answering machine might not have enough quiet time after
your outgoing message to allow the HP Officejet to detect fax
tones. This problem is more common with digital answering
machines.
The following actions might help solve these problems:
a. Disconnect the answering machine and then try receiving a fax.
If faxing is successful without it, the answering machine might
be causing the problem.
b. Reconnect the answering machine and re-record your outgoing
message. Make sure the message is as short as possible (no
more than 10 seconds long), and that you speak softly and
slowly when recording it. Try again to receive a fax.
If you have a special ring pattern for your fax phone number (using
a distinctive ring service through your telephone company), make
sure that the Answer Ring Pattern feature on your HP Officejet is set
to match. For example, if the phone company has assigned your
fax number a double ring pattern, make sure Double Rings is
selected as the Answer Ring Pattern setting. For information on
changing this setting, see change the answer ring pattern
(distinctive ringing)
on page 63.
Note that some ring patterns cannot be recognized by the
HP Officejet, such as those with alternating short and long ringing
patterns. If you are having problems with a ring pattern of this type,
ask your phone company to assign a non-alternating ring pattern.

Printing

hi,

here are the things that i want you to follow to somehow resolve your issue.

1. On your computer, click on start then go to control panel
2. inside control panel open the PRINTERS and FAXES (XP) or PRINTER (VISTA).
3. make sure change the default printer icon to the HP Officejet 5600 series.
- right click HP Officejet 5600 series and choose "set as default printer"
4. then try printing,

note: the reason why you encounter that problem is because the default printer icon is the "HP officejet 5600 series fax".
