Question about Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop

1 Answer

Can't install Mac OS X Leopard on Power Mac G5.

I got a Power Mac G5, from a friend, without Hard Drive. I bought a SATA Seagate 80 GB Hard Drive and Mac OS X Leopard installation DVD. I search online and found the installation steps, so I plug in the installation DVD and keep holding the C key during the boot up, but all I got is just a blank screen. After some more search online try to get some troubleshooting idea, I shutdown the system, turn it back on and holding the Option key, now the screen show up a lock with a blank block, I guest it's asking for some kind of password before it let the installation start. Call my friend for the password, she doesn't know any thing about it because she got this from a Flea Market. I never use Mac PC before and know nothing about Mac. I think it is some kind of BIOS / System password. Please help !!! very appreciate any suggestion to fix this.

My IMac g4 has a not enter sign logo with flashing folder , after I installed a new 250GB hard drive that has OS X 10.5. I even updated my RAM up to 1000 GB. When I re-installed the old drive it work, but...

The folder and do not enter sign means that the drive is not compatible. I'm going to guess that the drive came out of an intel Mac that had leopard loaded on it. This is not going to work with a PowerPC Mac. Do a clean install of leopard and you should be fine. I believe g4's go up to 10.5 and g5's go up to 10.5.8.

I try to install any os to this seagate barraguda 7200rpm, 80 gb hdd don't have completed installtion successfully. many files are missed. some times do not detecting the hard drive.

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA and
the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
good luck

Leopard OS

Is the hard drive SATA or IDE. On IDE, I know you can use delpart. Locate a SATA tool to wipe the partition of SATA drives. Install LEOPARD as usual then after rebooting.

Im trying to copy from mac to pc using seagate removable hard drive and its not working? When i plug the Seagate into my PC nothing happens

The hard drive volume format is only for MAC. Check the volume format if it is MAC OS Extended or MAC OS Extended (Journaled). If it is, then change it to MS DOS to make it readable and writable to a PC and MAC OS

Seagate Free Agent Drive Cannot be Modified on Mac G5

First of all Hello John :)

The new seagate drive you got needs to be unpartitioned and its file format system needs to be deleted and changed.

NB: You will lose all your data so make sure that you copy everything useful off it before you do these steps.

1. Get hold of a windows PC and right click on my computer
2. Choose manage ... choose disk management right click on the drive and delete the partition type
3. delete again until it comes unpartitioned space
4. Then go to your mac and you should be able to format it as a regular Mac drive.
5. If the Windows PC is inaccessible. Get hold of a copy of Linux UBUNTU distro. Boot your MAC from CD choose to boot os from CD (don't worry it will install nothring on your MAC it will just use the CD but make sure you choose the right option)
6. Keep your hard drive attached so it gets detected during bootup. Once the UBUNTU OS boots choose GParted and from there do the same thing i explained above.

Hope that this was of help :)

Cheers
(please take some time to rate solution)

Seagate SATA Baracuda 160 GB harddrive crashed

I've found this to just be the nature of hard drives. You never really can trust them, thats why you always need a backup. Maybe look into a fault tollerant RAID solution if it's really important (kinda expensive)

Well the flashing question mark means its not finding a bootable device meaning the hard drive has no OS on it. You should be able to put jaguar on it if its a retail version and not one from another mac product. Let me know how this works for you
