Turn off CPU, Unplug Power cable, And all usb devices, let it sit for about 20mins. Plug it all back in. Turn on the CPU! Also make sure if your device requires "DRIVERS" or if you have a CD download and install that before anything.

I have a coolpis L18 camera and when I connect to the pc it show that is connected but doesn't show pictures and appear i/o device error

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

I connect my wife's Coolpix L18 to the computer to download pictures and the computer doesn't acknowledge it. Operating system is Vista. I have tried it with and without the Nikon software... same...

Card reader would be the way to go. It doesn't use the camera or its batteries and is often recognized right away as an external device. Download the photos right away, don't open them from the card cause it can really slow down your computer. let me know if this is helpful.

USB port is good but won't read my coolpix L18

Sometimes you need software to synchronize your camera with your pc. It usually comes along in the cd with the camera. Dont worry, if you dont have one, just take out the memory card from the camera and put it in the card reader of your pc. Now you can transfer your files.

Computer won't recognize my nikon coolpix 4600

You need to give some additional information. What OS are you using? USB, with all newer OS's is native and you shouldn't have to have any special drivers or software to get the camera detected by the computer. Simply plug it in and go to "My Computer" and it should be seen. If this is not the case, start with the physical connections first. Check the USB cable between the two. if a 2nd cable does the same thing, check a different device with the same cable and connection port on the computer. If the port works, and it recognizes another device, you have to look at the camera. If it doesn't recognize the 2nd device, look at the port on the computer. If ANOTHER port doesn't work, go into the Hardware device manager and ensure that USB ports have not been disabled. If it's the camera, chances are the port has died. If this is the case and you don't want to trade the camera in, try getting a $30 card reader and place the data card into the reader to ensure that the card isn't the issue. The reader will ensure that you can transfer the images and will also save some wear and tear on your camera.
