No activity on my new speedstream 4200

Ethernet and DSL lights are indicating you have ADSL available on your line, and that you have computers connected to the router.

What has probably happened is that Optus did not set up the new router with your username and password. Go to thw following website for details on how to setup the modem.

http://help.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/optus_modems/speedstream_4200

Manual Modem Settings The Optus DSL Broadband self-installation CD configures all the necessary settings for your DSL Broadband service. You do not need to manually configure your modem if you have run the self-installation CD. While the following information is provided for your reference, using the self-installation CD is the recommended method for configuring your modem.
The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem can use either USB or Ethernet to connect to your computer.
  • If you are connecting via USB you will need to run the self-installation CD to install the USB driver before you connect your modem. The Siemens SpeedStream 4200 ADSL modem supplied by Optus has been customised for the Optus DSL Broadband service. Only the USB driver supplied on the self-installation CD will work with the Optus service. If you do not have the self-installation CD, you can download the latest drivers from the Siemens website.
  • If you are connecting via Ethernet it is possible to manually configure your modem without the self-installation CD. Only a web browser is required.
After connecting your modem there are two key steps to manually configure your modem for the Optus DSL Broadband service:
  • PC settings - Configure your computer's Ethernet network interface.
  • Configure Your Modem - Set the password in your modem's configuration pages.

PC Settings Step by step instructions are provided for each of the supported Windows operating systems:
  • Windows 98/Me
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista

Configure Your Modem To configure your modem settings you must now access the configuration manager using your web browser. This is done by entering the IP address in the address bar of the browser window as follows:
Note: If you are updating the password in your modem, please complete steps 1 to 3 only.
Step 1 of 5
  • Enter http://10.1.1.1 (Default IP address of the Optus Supplied Siemens SpeedStream 4200) to access the modem Configuration software. You may wish to add this page to your Favorites for easy access later.
  • The following modem System Summary screen will appear.
ss4200_home_disconnected.gif Step 2 of 5
  • Click on the word Setup in the green menu of options on the left side of the web page. An expanded set of options will be displayed.
  • Click PPP in the list of options that appeared below the word Setup.
  • The ISP Password page will appear:
ss4200_ppp.gif
  • Replace the default username (john_citizen@optusnet.com.au) with the username provided for you by Optus DSL Broadband.
  • Replace the default password with the password provided by Optus DSL Broadband in the Password field.
  • Note: You will find your Optus DSL Broadband username and password on the letter you received with your self-installation kit.
  • Save these details by clicking the Save Settings button.
Step 3 of 5
  • The next screen will ask you to disconnect and reconnect to the Optus DSL Broadband service.
ss4200_ppp_reconnect.gif
  • Click the link to return to the System Summary page.

HELP

Are you using a DSL modem? What is the brand of your modem? The setup CD is could be detecting your modem and not the Linksys router. I believe your modem is also a router that's why the setup says that you already have a router.

To fix that, do the following steps:

-Disconnect the router from the modem
-Connect your computer to port 1 on the router.

1. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.1680.1.1 on the address bar
2. It will prompt you for username and password. By default, no username and password is admin. If the default password didn't work, try to type your own password for the router.
3. When you get to the setup page, Look for Local IP Address or Router IP Address. That is 192.168.1.1. Change that to 192.168.2.1
4. Click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
5. After saving, unplug the power to the router for 10 seconds then plug it back in.
6. Now connect the router back to the modem. Modem should be connected to the Internet port of the router and your PC to port 1.

That should do it.

How do i configure my dlink 302g modem to my new ISP's settings?

Hi Nitangel
Before proceeding with modem installation you need to gather your connection details from your Internet Provider. You will need to know or find out the following information about your new ADSL connection from your Internet Service Provider:

Connection Type:
PPPoE
PPPoA
Bridge RFC1483

Default IP address: 10.1.1.1 (USB 10.1.1.2)
Username: admin
Password: admin

· Username / password (PPP connections only)
· IP address / Subnet Mask / Default Gateway (Bridge connections only)
· DNS IP Addresses (optional)

To set up, log into the modem using your WEB browser: type http://10.1.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter.
Enter username 'admin' and
password 'admin' (default setting).

Go to Quick Configuration page.
Set Refresh Rate to "No Refresh".

If it is a PPPoE or PPPoA CONNECTION:
Select Operation Mode: PPP.
In the Connection Type drop-down menu select PPPoE or PPPoA profile.
Enter username and your password.
Select CHAP under Authentication Type (check with your ISP if not sure).

If it is a BRIDGED RFC1483 CONNECTION:
Select Operation Mode: Bridge. If you do not see "Bridge" options please update your modem's firmware at http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/
Select LLC or VC Mux as suggested by your provider.

Make sure your VPI/VCI is set according to your ISP requirements:

Click on "Save & Reboot" to save settings.

Then give modem a minute or two to reboot and reconnect. Restart your computer and you should be able to access the Internet.

You do not have to run any login client on your computer or router because your modem logs to your ISP automatically.

Hope this information helps if I can help further let me know.

How To Set Up PPPoE DSL Connections with a WRT55AG Router

STEP 1: Before You Begin In order to set up your Linksys Router, be sure to first have the following: 1. A Linksys Router. 2. A DSL modem. 3. A working computer that can be wired in directly to the router for initial configuration and testing. 4. Two (2) standard Ethernet network cables. Linksys Routers come with one (1) standard network cable that you can use. 5. The PPPoE DSL username and password assigned by your Internet Service Provider. Depending on the provider, your username format might be similar to username, vzn123456, or an e-mail address (username@isp.net). If you are not sure what your username and password are, contact your Internet Service Provider for more information. STEP 2: Check Your Internet Connection Before installing your Linksys Router, it is important to first verify that you can successfully access the Internet by connecting directly to your modem (without your Linksys Router installed). 1. If you are connecting for the first time, follow the instructions provided by your provider to set up your modem and computer for online access. 2. Verify that you are able to access the Internet without any problems. If you are not able to get a connection, contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. When you are able to access the Internet using your modem, continue to Step 3 and proceed with the installation of your Linksys Router. STEP 3: Connect the Hardware Follow these steps to connect your Linksys Router to your modem and computer. 1. Shut down your computer and unplug the power cords connected to your modem and Linksys Router if they are currently powered on. 2. Disconnect the network cable that connects to the back of your computer. 3. Connect the network cable that you just removed to the Internet port (or WAN port) located on the back of your Linksys Router. Your modem should now be connected to your Linksys Router. 4. Connect a second network cable back into your computer (into the same port that was disconnected in #2). 5. Connect the other end of the second network cable to one of the numbered ports located on the back of your Linksys Router (labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). Your computer should now be connected to your Linksys Router. The following diagram shows how your network should be connected. Verify that your connections are correct, and continue to the next step. 6. Plug the included power adapter into the router?s Power port. Then, plug the other end of the power adapter into a nearby electrical outlet to supply power to your router. 7. Turn on your computer. Do not turn on your modem at this time. Only your router and computer should be turned on for Step 4. STEP 4: Configure the Router Follow these steps to configure your Linksys Router. 1. On the computer that is connected to the Linksys Router, open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. 2. Type http://192.168.1.1 into your browser?s Address or Location bar and click Go or press the [Enter] key on your keyboard. The IP address 192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of Linksys Routers. 3. A user name and password prompt will appear. Leave the user name field blank (empty), and type in admin (lowercase) for the password. The password admin is the default password of Linksys Routers. NOTE: The following username/password prompt screen will vary by operating system. 4. Once logged in, the router?s web-based Setup utility should load. In the section labeled Internet Connection Type, or WAN Connection Type depending on router model and firmware version, select the PPPoE option on the drop down list. Click here to view what an older Linksys router interface looks like. 5. Once PPPoE is selected, enter your PPPoE DSL username and password provided by your Internet Service Provider into the router?s User Name and Password fields. Depending on the provider, your username format might be similar to username, vzn123456, or an e-mail address (username@isp.net). If you are not sure what your username and password are, contact your Internet Service Provider for more information. NOTE: Be sure to clear the ?Password? field before entering your account password. AOL USERS: Enter in your PPPoE username as screenname@aol.com. 6. If the Keep Alive option is not selected, be sure to select it instead of the ?Connect on Demand? option. The ?Keep Alive? option will ensure that your connection stays connected even when it is not in use. 7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save Settings, or Apply button depending on router model, to save your changes. OR 8. Once your changes are saved, you will be presented with a button to return or you will be returned to the previous page automatically. If prompted, press Continue to return to the router?s Setup page. 9. Close and exit the web browser. STEP 5: Power Cycle Follow these steps to power on and off your devices in the correct o
