I disconnected the pwr supply and the unit shut down even though battery was 100% charged. re connected and now I can not for some reason gain access to internet nor can I open the network centre icon in settings. The wireless internet indication light is on but the internet icon on the menu bar is not visable. This is a Linux system

2.) The charging connector on the laptop has come loose from the contacts. Therefore a bad connection.
3.) Your battery is faulty.
I think possibility 2 is the most likely, although you will have to test possibility 3 by removing the battery and plugging in your charger and seeing if the laptop powers on.If it does power on then that rules out possibility 1 and 2 leaving a faulty battery.
First you need to check if there is some thing wrong with the Acer Aspire one battery or Acer Aspire one charger
from your description, it seems there is nothing with the charger, if your battery had been used about 2 years you can replace it for a new one
Battery is expired. Get new one or get yours rebuilt (about half the price and the cells are better than new) They are on the internet, look up Laptop battery refurbishing. Or outside chance that the charging circuit in the laptop is bad.
Few reason for the shut down
Could be heat, electrical,
1. try cleaning all vents with compress air in order to remore dust and fuzz that can be cloging the vents.
Once this done, verify that fans works proprelly,(check air flow coming out of vents) if they dont they will need to be replace or cleaned out.
2. Check power supply unit, and battery.
Sometime power supply unit is defective, getting too hot and power output is not stable and shuts down the laptop. ( change power supply unit) check if battery hold charge. if not change battery
3. Check connections for looseness and contact
If all seems normal, and none of the mentionned point seem to be defective, the cause is deeper and would need to be looked at by a technician.
Power green LED light should come on, CHG green LED light should also come on showing the battery is being charged. Leave your unit in Suspend mode while charging it, DO NOT turn it completely off as "Shutting Down.." because it will not charge your battery.
I just purchased an almost new Archos 5 on eBay recently, and the first day I had it, happened to me that I left the unit off and charging on the Mini Dock with external AC power supply, after 13-14 hours the CHG light still wasn't blinking. Then I though maybe I have to leave the unit in Suspend mode rather than completely off, which I did, and in a matter of 3 hours it fully charged the battery.
Again, do not shut down completely the unit, leave it on Suspended mode, or even on, and connected it to your mini dock, after a while the screen will go blank the unit will go into Suspended mode by itself, and after 3 hours on external power supply or 8 hours via USB on PC should be completely charged and your CHG light should be blinking, indicating the battery is charged.
Well it depends on how much damage is/has been done. I often fix damage such as this. You can often effect a repair by bridging the broken PCB by soldering, wire bridges over them, sometimes I have even totally removed broken pwr socket and soldered the power wires directly into place, if a new socket can't be obtained. Make sure you trace out whats what though first draw it out. Remember sometimes, there is sort of a switch in the pwr socket that cuts battery in & out. So, as long as you can get a Positive connection & then any earth connection will do for the Minus. Then it should work... Be Careful.
My problem was: Although the Batt Light shows the "charging" the desktop indicators show the battery is at 100%. If you dscinnect the power supply the computer dies.
SOLUTION: I found this worked on both occasion it happened to me occasions. 1. Shut down the netbook. 2. Remove battery for +- 15 min. 3. Replace battery. 4. Do not switch on netbook, ie boot up, until charge light goes to green ie indicates fully charged.
Find another battery it says like the one you have is faulty. If you try another known good battery and that fails just like yours then try a know good ac adaptor. If that fails, then its a problem with the motherboard not charging batteries properly but it really does sound like a faulty battery from my experience.
