Computers typically have 2 IDE connections on the motherboard. 1 Primary, and one secondary.

Your HDD ( Hard Disk Drive) should be connected to the primary as MASTER.
Typically the CD is connected to the secondary, as MASTER

You can connect the CD to the second fitting of the primary, however you will have to set the drive as a SLAVE.. not MASTER.
I can't comment on the "ripped" cable, except that some older computer cables split the cable, and reversed the crimp to designate the A & B FDD ( Floppy Disk Diives ).

If you neet additional info, please post additional comment.

No, you cannot use that cable--it is solely for the harddrive, and should not be able to connect the cd/dvd rom. That is for another harddrive in case you decide to upgrade.

You will need to get another cable for the cd/dvd rom---if you do not know how to install and/or change the ribbon/cable, then go to an expert, such as GeekSquad to take care of it for you. You may even know a neighbor or friend who is a computer technician. Good luck!

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. Hope this helps. if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it

My dvd's and cd's will not play from my e drive. What's the problem and how can i fix it?

you can order a new DVD rom from newegg.com which cost less than $20.
it is easy to remove the dvd rom drive from your machine.
just open the case, unscrew the screws holding the dvd rom in and unplug the cables.
you need to find out whether you have a IDE DVDROM or SATA DVDROM before purchasing your new DVD rom drive.
IDE looks like a ribbin flat wide cable.
SATA is a skinny small cable.

How do I open the tower to insert a c d

Open My Computer and then right click on the CD/DVD drive of your system that are define. For example: "E, or F, or G". Click on eject. or Press on the button CD/DVD-ROM. Mostly it's located in the right sight just below the CD/DVD-ROM "where the CD/DVD can insert". And if this two is not working than take a pin length around 2.5" and push inside the hole it's located in the right sight just below the CD/DVD-ROM. Hope it'll be helpful to you. All the Best!

Emachine ET1331G-03w Documentation

Hi there,

To install an IDE CD rom, you will need to open your computer and you will see an IDE Slot, your computer usually has two of them either directly next to each other or under each other, there is usually one white one and one blue one. IDE Slots look like this:
2604eb7.jpg

The white IDE Slot is usually for the Hard Disks and the blue IDE Slot id usually for the CD Roms.

The white IDE Slot is the Primary Slot and the blue is the secondary.

You will need an IDE cable to plug in to your blue IDE Slot then you will need to plug the cable in to your CD Rom and make sure that your CD Rom is set to run/work as the master. If your computer only has one IDE Slot or you do not have an extra IDE Cable you can plug the CD Rom in to the Primary IDE Slot with the Hard Disk assuming you are only using one Hard Disk.

If you are going to use the Primary IDE Slot you will need to make sure that your CD Rom is set to run/work as a slave and it must not be set as the master. The way to change it is by moving the pins at the back of the CD Rom, they are found at the back next to the place where you plug the IDE Cable in to or next to the power input. You will be able to tell if your CD Rom is set as a slave or as a master by checking the image on the top part of the CD Rom, this image will tell you how to set your CD Rom as a master or as a slave.

Thank you for using FixYa! Have a nice day and please remember to rate this solution.

Warm regards,

My CD-rom will not work after inserting CD's or DVD will not rev-up what wrong and what should I Do I Have Inspiron 531????

1.The laser optical eye of the CD-ROM drive may be dirty, and needs cleaning.
If the optical eye is dirty, it won't read the information on the disk you install.

A) Computer on, Windows loaded, open the tray of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or DVD burner drive. Whichever drive you are referring to. DVD-R/RW)
Shut the computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

Unplug the computer from power.
Use a can of compressed air fror computers, and spray air into the DVD-ROM drive.

The optical eye, is located on the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive. (Or burner drive)
The opening in the bottom of the tray, that comes out for your disk, is where you spray the air.

You won't be able to see the optical eye, so how will you know you are spraying the air at the correct place?

If you start at the front of the bottom of the DVD-ROM drive, and work your way towards the back, you will clean the optical eye. Spray across from side to side, and in rows, as you proceed towards the rear.

(Air will make it's way through, and reach the optical eye. The optical eye is not visible, as it can be harmful to the human eye when operating.
Laser.
When the tray is closed the optical eye is exposed. It is not exposed to where it can harm the computer user.

More information that may be helpful, in understanding where the optical eye is located,

Scroll down to the heading - CD-ROM drives. Also view the photos down on the right, and the animated GIF.

2.Make Windows reinstall the drivers.
This solution requires physically removing the flat ribbon cable from the back of the DVD-ROM/DVD burner drive, then reattaching it.

Software advice of Updating the drivers, Rollback the drivers, or downloading, and installing the drivers, doesn't always work, or doesn't work.

If the physical solutions I am providing here does not work, we will proceed to the software solutions if you wish. (Comment)

1.Computer off, and unplugged from power. Open the computer case,

Dell Support - Dell Inspiron 531 Desktop PC - Manuals - Documentation - Removing and Installing Parts,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/parts.htm#wp1595069

(Removing the computer cover)

CAUTION!
BEFORE you reach inside you need to relieve your body of Static electricity!

Not trying to freak you out, just needed to catch your attention.
Static electricity, can fry out the delicate computer hardware components, inside your computer.

Touch the metal frame of the computer case.

Computer unplugged from power you are safe.
Touch the metal frame of the computer case, (AFTER you unplug the computer), the computer is safe.

In the above Manual documentation - Removing and Replacing Parts, click on - Drives

Scroll down to the heading - CD or DVD Drive
(Towards the bottom of the page)

Unplug the DATA cable from the CD-ROM drive.
(No.2 in the illustration)

[The two optical drives you have are SATA drives. Dell indicates you have a DVD-ROM drive, (Plays CD's and DVD's), and a DVD burner drive.
(Plays CD's and DVD's, and records)

DVD-R/RW is a 'Burner drive'.

If the information above is correct, you have a SATA power cable, and a SATA Data cable.
(The Data cable transfers information from the optical drive, to the computer, and vice-versa)

The SATA power cable connector, is longer than the Data cable connector.
The power cable connector has 15 pins.
The Data cable connector has 7 pins.

Information,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SATA

Scroll down to the heading,
Data

Look to the right at the photo. This is a SATA Data cable, and it's connector.
Yours may not be a bent 90 degree elbow, but it will have the L shape in the connector, and 7 pins.

Scroll down to the heading Power Supply. Look down to the right at the photo of the 15 pin SATA power cable connector.
This is Not the cable/connector you want to unplug.

Unplug the SATA Data cable from the optical drive you're referencing to.
Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of Five seconds.
Let go of the Power On button.
Do this two more times.

Plug the SATA Data cable back in.
Close the computer case.
Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute.
Turn the computer on. Try the drive.

I have an e-machines with a dvd/cd-rom in one that will not work.

i understand that your pc has a single dvd-drive that has the problem that it dos read dvds but not cds...
please give model because this is a rare error.
to check it, get the following disks and the freeware program 'burnatonce' (it is a burning software that accesses the drives on a lower than windows basis )
to check from the hardware side what the problem is:

install burnatonce
run it
open tools/device info
and check if the following disc are really recognized or not

a standard music cd(audio cd)
a computer cd(original ! windows install cd or other install cd)
a self burnt cd containing mp3's (CD-R type, 700MB or800MB)
any other computer cd for pc

an original film dvd
a selfburnt film dvd (DVD-R)
an original computer-data dvd (any PC-Game will do)

if only dvd's work, strange!

get a new drive then.
