My typewriter is making a chirping noise every time I press a key

IBM Wheelwriter 3500

My typewriter just started making a chirping noise everytime I press a key. I thought it may have been the springs inside, but do they have anything to do with the letter keys?

If it does hold the code key, press and release the "L" key type 001 release the "L" key this sets the keyboard to U.S., if this works the cure is to replace the keyboard.

Try pressing and holding code key while pressing "L" release "L"
and type 001 release the code key. If this solves the trouble but it comes back on the next power up the keyboard is bad.
