Freezer defrost problem

Hi thanks for the help on my Amana bottom freezer problem. Yes it was iced up - I manually defrosted & now it is cool, but I suspect it will happen again. I've studied up a bit and know how to ck. the heater and T-stat which I'm assuming is behind the cover plate. I was looking for service info and surprised there's not much out there.
Amana ARB2257CC is on the sales rcpt. (6/10/03) - can you tell me if the timer is manual or electronic? Where is it located? Do they glue a schematic to the back of the unit?
Thanks for any addl. help.

I have the same refrigerator. The defrost timer on that unit is in the control cluster in the refrigerator cabinet. When you look at the control cluster there is a blank hole just in front of the screw that holds the light bulb cover in place. You can look up in that hole to see the defrost timer, you can also put a screw driver up there and turn the timer to the next setting if you want to check its function. To remove the timer just take out the control cluster and it is mounted right on top. Very easy to replace.

Manual accorting to the help page of the amana manual . The defrost time is usually located under the unit close to the compressor. Often you can see the clock part go around through a hole in the cover.  I am betign that the defrost time is you problem.  If you can't here it or see it moving (the clock part that operates the cams) then it is defective. I have disassembles , cleaned and oiled defrost times in the past and have had good success restoring their function.

My bottom freezer gets cold but the top part (fridge) does not. Why? I have an older first addition style

Its defrost problem. When the freezer section gets cold and reaches its required cooling temperature, after that the frost on freezer section starts defrosting and the cooling fan in the freezer section blows this cool air from freezer to fridge. But if the defrost cycle does not start then over ice will get collected on freezer ventilations and that will block the air passing section from freezer to fridge, so the freezer gets cool but fridge section does not cool.Try manual defrost by unplugging the refrigerator from main power outlet for 24 hours then reconnect it and check, if the same problem is noticed again,. If yes then its defrost board problem. The defrost board located in the back of fridge section. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com or from online sears part site. ------------- Thank you.

Ice build up in freezer

Defrost system failure.

Defrost timer, heater, therma disk, any one could be bad.

You could manually defrost and this would get the Ref back to working for a couple of days before it iced up again. Remember there is a lot of ice build up on the cooling coils in the freezer that you can't see so, a little extra time with a hair dryer is needed to do a complete manual defrost.
