Question about Empire ECS BF-30 Infra-Red Wall Mounted Panel Heater

1 Answer

Smell of gas while burning

We have the Empire ECS BF-30 Ventless Heater.  There are no leaks or smells when the unit is off, however, when the unit is on and burning, the gas smell is prevalent.  The smell since we first installed the unit has gotten stronger.
We are wondering if there is an adjustment to reduce the smell of gas (as we understand there will always be a slight smell).
We reside near Brighton, Michigan and if this unit requires service, is there a recommended technician for us to call?
Thank you very much for your time and help...
Mike

Incomplete combustion could be a major health and safety issue. Seek qualified help and do not use until then.

SOURCE: natural gas heater

I'm not a gas expert, however if I could offer an alternative possibility: I recently opened a gas heater to find a child (I assume) had inserted a CD and a pen into it. If the soot is more than a short term problem this is obviously not the cause but it may help some people.

SOURCE: Empire GWT-50 creating soot and sometimes flashs when starting

if it giving off soot then it is wrong it sounds like the air mixture is wrong and the flames are light back to the injector that would be the woosh , no heat er should give off soot if combustion is correct

CO2 and flame "dancing"

This normally is caused by low gas pressure, or some blockage in the burners. Do not run this heater until it is fixed.

It still has a burn off smell it won't come on at 2 and 3 when it goes off it make a sqealing sound sometimes

As far as the smell is concerned ... If you initially burned it on high for a minimum of 45 minutes, the smell should have dissipated. If however, you have recently painted prior to or just after it's installation, it's probably picking up the new paint odor and making it worse. Rug or floor cleaning products will do the same thing. As far as the squeeling noise is concerned, that could be caused by a low pressure problem from your LP tank regulator. If it occurs when the outside temp is well below freezing, more than likely the tank regulator is partially frozen. Soak a bath towel in hot water, ring it out and place it around the tank regulator to thaw it out. Once the gas is flowing freely again, the squeeling noise should cease.

Ventless gas heater smells like kerosene

It is posible that your heater is burning fumes from paint, varnish or stain and some times carpet cleaners or other household cleaners. I work for a utility company. We get called to homes for a lighter fluid/kerosene smell quit often. Most of the time it is from the fumes burning off on a standing pilot gas oven. The odor collects in the oven and is released in the customers face when they open the oven door. This will happen with any open flame appliance when exposed to these fumes.

Charmglow Ventless Wall heater stinks - Literally!

some suggestions that may help: a sulfer type smell is the additive in the natural gas, kind of like eggs. if this is your smell, you have a gas leak. if any other propellents like hair spray, furniture polish, air fresheners are nearby, the vapors are burned by the stove and you can smell those, as well as a fine white powder building up on the stove. if a paint smell, then check to see if the back wall of the stove paint is burning away. if so, you can speed the process with a small hand held torch used for plumbing. when the paint is gone, the smell is gone. good luck.
