John, if you have not already checked, please check that "caps lock" is in the appropriete setting..the key IS case sensitive.
If this is an upgraded system it may not be the correct key on the computer sticker. or if someone has upgraded this computer with an unlicenced (cracked) copy the product key may or may not work.
Contact Microsoft and have another product key issued in the event that you cannot determine your current product key. This is also something you may need to do when you upgrade Windows XP from one version to another. For example, you may need another product key issued when upgrading from Home Edition to Media Player Edition.
