Question about Brother IntelliFAX 4100 Laser Fax

3 Answers

The 4100 Printers in my office make a horrible grinding noise. The drum units constantly need replacing because they get stripped out and the grinding noise starts again.. Is there a more permanant solution to getting rid of this noise other than replacing drum units constantly? Is there a wheel or something inside the fax machine that is causing the drum units to strip and create the grinding noise?

Definitely drum drive gear is cracked or stripped. Can be replaced by qualified tech. Part costs a few dollars. Alot of tear down involved. I charge about $75.00to repair that problem

A good solution it to go paperless and get a fax number that sends faxes to an email address. Then train your staff to send faxes from the pc they use. Many copiers can be set up to be fax machines as well.

Seems like the drum drive gear is bad, and is not meshing w/the drum causing it to strip the drum gear.

The part that you are talking about is not from the fuser unit. It is from the drum unit, it is most likely the primary charge grid. It is part of the drum that charges the drum..... You may just want to replace the drum unit..... If the grid fell off the plastic holder may be broken... Good Luck

Did the noise start right after you replaced a toner? If so it must be a bad toner which is causing the gears to grind. If this noise happened out of the blue then it might be a bad fuser drive gear which is the gears that connect the fuser to the machine.

If you pull the drum out of the machine. Close front cover. is the noise still there. If it is then you have a broken fuser gear. If noise is not there remove the toner cart. from drum reinstall the drum unit in machine see if noise is there. if noise is there then it will be the drum. If not reinstall the toner try that if noise comes back then it is your toner cart.

Horrible grinding noise

The problem sounds like a broken or stripped gear in the printer. If the unit is under warranty I would contact the authorized repair station for that printer in your local area.

Intellifax 4100 grinding noice

Probably caused by the toner cart. Only use genuine new Brother brand supplies. Remans fail quite often with Brother machines.
Possibly bad gears on fuser drive. But with the poor print quality, I suspect it is the toner.

Thank you Krissy! I had the same problem with the horrible grinding noise.

I took out all of the toners and the photo developer and noticed that my Blue toner was leaking all over. After reading your post, I tried replacing the toner. It worked!!! No more noise - and no more mess!

Gear making a grinding noise

Not too good news I'm afraid. It sound like the fuser gear has failed. Generally the fuser unit (hot section or hot rollers in the back) need to be replaced. Usually when the gear has worn or failed the fuser rollers are also worn and need to be replaced. The gear can be replaced seperately but is a very risky operation and usually results in parts in the fuser unit falling appart due to age and wear, so it is best done as a unit. If possible do not run the machine as it can cause damage to gears around the fuser unit. The best option is to find out how much a fuser unit and labour to fit would be at your local service centre.
