What BIOS menu option is used to configure the I/O address and IRQ for the first serial port

It is on the Super I/O Configuration Sub- Menu of the BIOS which can be found on the Advanced Page. The actual setting is called Serial Port 1 Address.

Information was taken from the online user manual for the motherboard. http://www.tyan.com/manuals/S7025_manual_20140508.pdf

Communication port is not working properly

COM1 and COM2 refer to a computer's communications, or serial, ports. COM1 ports are often used on older PCs to connect network devices, digital cameras and mice. Faulty drivers software that enables the hardware to communicate with the operating system or incorrect hardware configuration can influence COM1 behavior. In rare cases, the expansion card that adds the serial ports to the PC can fail, rendering both COM1 and COM2 ports useless. To repair a COM1 port, you must determine what is preventing the port from working before attempting a solution.

Click "Start." Go to "Control Panel" and then click "Hardware & Sound." Select "Device Manager" from the submenu. Expand "Ports (COM & LPT)." Double-click "COM1." Review Device Status on the General tab to check for problems with the software driver. If the message "The Device Is Working Properly" appears, click "OK" to close the window; otherwise, look up the error message on Microsoft Support. Follow the directions in the Knowledge Base to correct the issue. Press "Alt" and "V" to open View. Scroll to "Resources by Type." Press "Enter." Double-click "Interrupt Request (IRQ)" to see a list of devices. Double-click "Communications Port (COM1)." Check the term to the left of COM1 to see if the card uses an ISA or PCI interface. If the card uses a PCI interface, it can use the same IRQ as another PCI device without producing a hardware conflict. If the device is ISA, it needs its own IRQ. Go to the "Resources" tab. If "No Conflicts" appears in the Conflicting Device List, close the window; otherwise, uncheck "Use Automatic Settings." Click the drop-down menu and select each configuration until the port no longer interferes with another device. If conflicts occur with each configuration, double-click "IRQ"; you may need to try different configurations before Windows gives you permission to edit the interrupt request. Click the up or down arrow to change the IRQ until the message "No Devices Are Conflicting" appears in the Conflict Information field. Click "OK" to close each window. Click "Yes" when prompted. Connect a device to the COM1 port to test the port. If the device doesn't respond, shut down the computer and then unplug the power cable. Disconnect all devices from the back of the PC. Remove the case cover and touch the computer's chassis. Set the computer on its side so that the PCI and ISA cards sit at a 90-degree angle to the floor. Find the serial ports on the back of the PC. Look on the opposite side of the case to find the associated card. Shine a flashlight onto the card and make sure that the copper contacts are not visible. If you can see the contacts, reseat the card in its slot so that it's fully installed to the motherboard. Reassemble the case and boot into Windows to test the COM1 port. If the port still fails to work, you may need to replace the serial port card.

I HAVE A SERIAL PC CARD MANHATTAN N/P: 158206, AND I NEED A SERIAL PORT "COM1" WITH IRQ4 AND I/O ADDRESS 3F8H... I ALREADY DISABLE INTEGRATED MOTHERBOARD "COM1" PORT, BUT WIN-XP DOES...

Hi,

The ability to configure the IRQ setting on a serial port is dependent upon the manufacturers driver software. In XP you can go into Device Manager then the properties for the COM1 port and configure the settings.

I got a new SATA 500gb HDD but the motherboard wont detect it.

Access to your Bios Setup & configure the Bios settings.

Features Setup Page : This page sets up some parameters for peripheral devices connected to the system.

CMOS SETUP UTILITY - Copyright (C) 1985-2003, American Megatrends, Inc.
Features Setup
OnBoard Floppy Controller : Enabled
Serial Port1 Address 3F8/IRQ4 : Enabled
OnBoard IR Port : Disabled
Parallel Port Address : 378
Parrllel Port Mode : ECP
ECP Mode DMA Chnnel : DMA3
Parallel Port IRQ : IRQ7
OnBoard PCI IDE Controller : Both
OnBoard SATA-IDE
: Enabled *(Make sure This is enabled)
Audio Device : Enabled
Modem Device : Auto
Ethernet Device : Enabled

If you have got a SATA III HDD, ie if it is a Western Digital Sata III you need to configure the jumpers to work with your older Sata interface port.(Only Sata 1 & 2 ports on your Mainboard Socket 478). As for Seagate Sata III HDD, the configuration is automatic.

If your 500GD HDD is not detected, try updating the BIOS!
A word of caution "Updating the Bios is not for the Novice" Do it at your own risk. Failure in updating the Bios may render your Mainboard useless.

Hope it helps.

How to enable the serial port under linux(ubundu 10.04) tell me commands for what are all the to solving the problem: i need immd answer

Linux offers various tools. Linux uses ttySx for a serial port device name. For example, COM1 (DOS/Windows name) is ttyS0, COM2 is ttyS1 and so on.
Task: Display Detected System's Serial Support

Simple run dmesg command
$ dmesg ' grep tty
Output:
[ 37.531286] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A [ 37.531841] 00:0b: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A [ 37.532138] 0000:04:00.3: ttyS1 at I/O 0x1020 (irq = 18) is a 16550A setserial command

setserial is a program designed to set and/or report the configuration information associated with a serial port. This information includes what I/O port and IRQ a particular serial port is using, and whether or not the break key should be interpreted as the Secure Attention Key, and so on. Just type the following command:
$ setserial -g /dev/ttyS[0123]
Output:
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x1020, IRQ: 18 /dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4 /dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3

setserial with -g option help to find out what physical serial ports your Linux box has.

My com port can,t see the reader

Devices that use COM ports can be frustrating because there are three things to configure.
1) Make sure the com port you are trying to use is enabled in the BIOS Enter the BIOS during the POST on startup and write down the port number, port address and IRQ for later reference....

2) Check the status of your COM ports in Windows DEVICE MANAGER. Confirm the port is active and that there are no problems or conflicts with the port....

3) Check the settings in the reader application software and make sure the program is configured to use the same settings as the available com port.....Also, some devices have DIP switches used to set the port address IRQ and BAUD (speed) the device will communicate at.

Also consider the possibility that the reader is malfunctioning.

USB Ports

one way would be to download and install latest device drivers from the net. it should help.. if you are using win XP, there is likely a BIOS or Windows configuration problem. On some computers there is a configuration option in the BIOS that asks whether an IRQ should be assigned to USB. Although the option's actual wording varies among BIOS manufacturers, you must enable this option by setting it to either On or Yes (depending on your BIOS manufacturer and BIOS version). Otherwise no USB devices will work on XP. A problem with Windows XP’s USB Controller configuration can also prevent any USB devices from working. To determine whether the USB controllers are working properly, open Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers node. Beneath this node, you should see a USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub. Depending on your PC, there will either be a USB Universal Host Controller and a USB Root Hub listed for each of your computer’s USB ports or a USB Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub for multiple ports

PCI GA-8ID533 V1.1

there is no PCI lock on any retail boards. But there are IRQ sharings and conflicts. Set IRQ to auto, if not, then manualy and if so, then disable a few things, just to free up some IRQs. All depends on the board, best is to consult the manual for the IRQ sharing table and work with that. (disable one SERIAL, IDE port or USB port if you need an extra IRQ) Also check for onboard equivalent to the card you are adding, disable the onboard part...
