Ok when looking at your question i became very currious as to the answer myself so i did a litttle research and i think maybe the info on this page here: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/33307589/certificate-required-to-c.aspx
could be of some use to you . even though the link describes a diferent network adapter the information there is about the same exact error on a router of the same type

I hope this information helps ... if it does not then let me know and i will find some more answers since i used to have the exact same laptop that you have now R40

Limited or no connectivity message is usually because your connection did not acquire an ip address and resorted to the default address that starts with a 169.

you can right click on the connection and click "repair" and it will try to obtain an ip address again.

but i think maybe you have a router Config issue and it looks like your router is unable to give your adapter an ip address

if you are using a cable internet connection i would try pressing the tiny reset button on the back of the router to restore all settings to default (if you have a dsl connection that requires a login and password then that login info will be wiped out when you press that button) but most routers usually have the default settings for cable connections

Also there may be an encryption compatibility issue with your wireless n router and wireless g adapter . you could try disabling the encryption on the router as a test to see what happens and then re-enabling it at a lower encryption setting

i personally would try resetting the router and disabling the wireless encryption to see if it works that way you can rule out the adapter as the problem.. you can always re-enable it and if it stops working when you enable it then you will know its a Config setting within the router

SOURCE: I cant get a wireless connection on my IBM R40 using a Linksys G

I had the same problem with my R40 (2681) and a Linksys G router. The specs on IBM's/Lenovo's site indicate that the wireless card in the R40 only handles certain types of wireless encryption. The newer types (e.g. WPA) won't work on it and they are usually the standard on routers nowadays. My Linksys G router works fine with the R40 with WEP or with no encryption. Not ideal, but that's life with an old laptop.

Network Key (WEP, WPA, WPA2 Encryption key)
To connect your computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is configured in the Wireless settings in the Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase or WPA or WPA2 key that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router.

I HAVE A IBM R40 WITH INTEL/R1 PRO WIRELESS LAN 2100 3B, IT CANNOT CONNECT TO MY ROUTER WITH WEP OR WPA ENCRIPTION

Check to see the wireless LAN card driver is enable and working, if not reinstall the wireless driver.
Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

How can i turn on wireless adapter on the IBM thinkpad R40 laptop.I can't see the wireless adapter switch.......the drivers are already installed successfully. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

the r40 has no hardware switch. it has a software switch. you must first determine what type of wifi card if any is installed. most of the stock cards are intel or cisco and the ibm support site has the software used to control them. sometimes, thru the network connections, windows can take control if the drivers are installed

Can't get thinkpad to connect wireless

Be aware that the wireless card/drivers in the R40 can't handle WPA encryption. Verify your network encryption level. If it is WEP, you may have a different problem. If it is WPA, that is the problem and you can't fix that according to IBM/Lenovo.

I just bought an IBM thinkpad R40 and i want to activate the wi-fi on it kindly tell me the step to follow

You should be able to use the Fn - F5 buttons to activate the wireless card, or go through "View Network Connections" in windows to manually activate it.
After that you will be able to detect wireless networks in your area and link to them

Lost wireless - Ibm thinkpad r40

haha worrying isnt it...
after reinstallation of windows no drivers for blutooth , wireless quite often modem and same vga,
windows by default does not install because need specific software ...(drivers)
what you need to do is first of all find out what wifi it is ; like wlan400 e.g.
you then need to download and install the driver for it .as soon as the driver is present windows will detect and install device,
look in device manager for devices with no drivers intalled.
same precedure for each device.

Thinkpad r40 - wireless disappeared

Go to the control panel, then System, then Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Then Network adapters - you should have two network adapters one LAN and one wireless.
If most likely have one, the LAN adapter and a yellow ? against a network adapter - this will be a wireless adapter (its not installed)

Check your BIOS and make sure the wireless card is enabled.
You need to download from the IBM/Lenove WEB site the wireless driver (there may be several types that is installed for your model laptop). Make sure you select the correct Windows version driver.
When you run the driver,it will uncompress and copy to your hard drive in C:\drivers. You can then install the driver from this directory. If it doesn't work then repeat with another driver, most likely one that works will be the Intel one.
