Hi,
Basic idea is to replace the infrared-cut filter in front of the CCD sensor with an infrared filter, so the camera only "sees" the light in/above near-infrared range (mostly invisible to human eye).
The operation on a d40 is a bit fiddly. You will of course need a replacement infrared filter. You can cut it yourself from a standard lens infrared filter (that's what I normally do). It might then need some positioning to get autofocus to work properly in case the replacement filter is not the same thickness as the original one.
I've actually just found this tutorial on the net, you might find it useful:

Good luck,
Raf

I son't know how to turn a camera into an IR camera but I did find a website that shows you how to make a filter that allows you to take IR photos. You can make the filter yourself for free unless you don't have the items needed but then again the item needed are only a couple of dollars. Here is the link.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Please recommend digital SLR nikon cacmera for this lens

Any Nikon digital SLR will work with this lens. However, there are two things to consider.

On cameras other than the D700 and the D3 family, the smaller sensor will make the lens appear as a 105-315mm. On the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, and D5000 cameras, you will lose the autofocus capability.

Do the old AF lenses for the Nikon N60 SLR fit the new DSLR cameras

Hi ericm675, Yes they will. What you run into is were one uses a auto focus lens on a newer digital such as a D40. Some of the new digital cameras do not have the drive gear to turn the autofocus on the lens. Those newer cameras use electronics. Look on your camera lens mount at 7:00 you will see the drive pin. Look on your old autofocus lens you should see a slot where that pin fits. Hope this helps you.

Using a Nikon D40 digital slr with a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED lens I was previously able to autofocus bun now am not. Can you suggest reasons why this may be?

Please check if the Autofocus-switch on your lens is set to M/A. Also check if the Autofocus on your camera is switched on. For detailed information about your cameras autofocus, please check this site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/af-settings.htm

Have you ever cleaned the contacts on the lens and the camera body where they meet? If not, do so now with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Nikon D40 LCD screen.

Since the camera is an SLR, (single lens reflex), the CCD image sensor is behind the shutter until you take a picture. Sorry, but you cannot use the LCD to take pictures.
