Inoperative switch user function

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with an XP operating system. I have two accounts on this computer. Up until a few days ago, I was able to switch from one account to the other simply by clicking on start, log off, and switch user. Suddenly this switching mechanism will no longer function. In order to get into the other account, I have to reboot and go directly to it. Any idea what may have gone wrong?

Windows operating systems often lose vital files which make bits of the operating suddenly faulty. If you have a utility which checks through and repairs these orphan files that may solve the problem. Programs such as Norton Systemworks do this quite well.
I believe that a PC is alot like a car. It's a bit of care and attention and a good service every now and then, otherwise parts start to go faulty and drop off.
A good service every six months is advisable including getting rid of unwanted files and a good disk defragmentation. I just have the operating system and programs on my C drive and when I did my first fresh install, I made an image file of the C drive. Now once a year, I format my C drive and reinstall the system from the image giving me an instant fresh operating system with all my programs already installed.
If repair programs don't work, then do an XP repair with your XP installation disc. Make sure you back up your files first, just in case.

Reinstalled Windows XP on an old computer (DELL Dimension 2400) and the monitor won't display above basic resolution. Downloaded and reinstalled the monitor driver and still no good. Opened up START

According to the Dell Support web site the Dell Dimension 2400 has a built in Intel 3D extreme graphics adapter, assuming you are using this and not a PCI graphics card.

Go to the Intel Download Centre and run their Intel Driver Update Utility which will automatically scan your system for updated drivers for any installed or integrated Intel devices.

If the Intel Utility identifies an updated driver for your graphics adapter then download and install that which should enable you to configure a higher resolution for your display.

My Dell Dimension 2400 has stopped working - how do i restore the factory settings ?

Hello,

It appears your model Dell 2400 should have been supplied with the CD's for reinstalling Windows XP, CD will be green or blue in color and the drivers and applications that came with the computer.

If so, back up your files first to an external drive and then put the CD in the CD drive and reboot the computer. It should come up to reinstall XP.

If good to go, you will be prompted to install the second Cd as well as online XP updates.
Software that was installed after you bought the computer also wouyld have to be reinstall as well as restoring your backed up file.

Rememberm all data is lost when you reinstall your operating system, unless these is a choice on install that may ask for destructive, or non-destrutive (keeps files).

I am attaching a link to Dell for your to copy and paste into your web browser for the support page for drivers and user guide in the event you need to reveiw the process.

Unable To User Accounts (Dell - Windows XP)

What you are describing is a symptom of Operating System corruption. This happens with Malware (spyware, virus, trojan, etc.) or other buggy software. Sometimes the cause can not be easily determined.

The fix is to be sure your system is clean of all malware first. If you are reasonably sure the system is clean, remove any software you are not using to be on the safe side.

Next to check for corruption, from Start > Run type cmd and hit Enter. Then type in SFC /scannow and hit Enter.

It will likely prompt you for your Windows XP CD and take roughly 15-30 minutes to run.

If you still have the problem, boot to the Windows XP CD and run a repair on your O/S.

Let me know if you need the details on how to run the repair.
