Washing machine fills, but won't agitate

By Younk on Dec 17, 2006

I have a GE washing top load washing machine, and it has filled up, but won't switch to the next cycle. I have attempted the troubleshooting suggestions from the manual, with no luck. Right now, the tub is full, but the machine just won't move to the next cyle, to agitate, rinse or spin. I have tried different settings with no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

The lid switch may have gone bad. It's a $20 part that you may be able to replace yourself. You may be able to check it. With the lid open and the dial set to agitate, try inserting a something PLASTIC like a stirrer or ballpoint pen cap into the slot where the lid cam engages the switch. It may be possible to manually turn the switch on with pressure UP, in the direction the cam would normally contact.

Hi sounds like the bushes have gone. You can pick up another couple for around £12. If you take the top off, you will find them located either side of the motor. Replace these and all should be okay.

I had a similar problem with my Centrex (now defunct company). I found that by emptying the water (lay the exit pipe down to ground level or into a bucket) the machine would then kick over to the spin cycle. I am assuming it has something to do with the water pump not pumping out the water and subsequenttly, not being able to move past the rinse cycle.

Check to make sure the machine is not filling and draining at the same time. If it is the drain tube is not high enough and is siphoning water out of the drum.

check the lid switch...if the machine thinks the lid is open...it will just sit there after filling!!

Water will not turn off and fills the tub to overflow, mostly in large load capacity.

I also have a GE Top Loading Washing Machine. It fills with water nicely, but won't click onto the next cycle. It just makes this buzzing noise. So I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on again about 30 minutes later, but still nothing. Just this buzzing noise. The Machine is currently filled to the top with water and clothes. Any help would be great! Thanks!
