I have the same problem as Guest Nov, 2008- specifically, the drive won't mount after it is improperly ejected, which happens time to time due to random acts of nature.

This has been going on for a little over a year.
I am usually able to fix it by running macjanitor, unplugging and replugging the various cables and restarting everything a couple times. I admit, that I'm never sure of what actually fixes the just works after a little while.

This time is different. I have been troubleshooting for 2 days now and none of my usual tricks have been working.

So, this morning my MyBook mounted out of the blue (yay!). Not so fast. I decided that even if I am able to get the thing to mount here and there, having this hard drive as a backup is too much of a liability. I decided that I would plug in my 3rd backup, get it up to date, and toss my WD MyBook out the window.

Well, my OTHER WD external wouldn't mount either. I unplugged it to try an other usb slot and it caused the computer screen to turn all grey and tell me to force quit the machine. Oh ****. This means that now BOTH of my external backups were incorrectly edjected and now BOTH wont mount leaving me 2 matching black bricks to toss out the window.

I am going to try all my tricks (macjanitor, restarting everything a few times) and I'm sure I will eventually get them to work again but this is just not right. Once I recover my data I am going to get of these things once and for all and buy an other brand. Any suggestions?

If you stubled across this thread because you are a mac person looking to buy an external hard drive I advise you to stay clear of WD. They are just too finicky and thier support is horrible.

I have the same problem. WD won't mount even to itself. Meaning the light on front signifying it's running is not even working. I can hear and feel the hard drive spinning but that's it. It won't show up on 2 different machines. I started up Disc Warrior on one and it doesn't show there either. Not sure what to do.

Was thinking of taking the drive out and putting it in a different case to see if that works.

When I connect the My Book WD hard drive it does not mount. The light is on, but nothing happens. It doesn't show up on my mac. I have searched online for a solution, but I can't find it.

Same thing happened here...and my college art thesis is on my external drive!!! Lucky for me I triple back things up! I am not buying WD anymore...I had a WD passport that did the same thing. had it 1 year and it stopped working one day, so i bought another thinking i just bought a dud, but now my 500GB MyBook Pro that I bought in late 2007 isnt working...lame. I'm not going to drop $100+ every year for a hard drive, no way! I just bought me a LaCie...Hope it brings me better luck.

Blue light just stays solid, no hard drive sounds.

HI. So I had this problem twice with the same hard drive. I didn't have the money to replace the hard drive the first time, but this time I did, so my ultimate solution to offer is to purchase a different HD and migrate the data from the current one.
How did I get the drive to turn back on so I could get the data migrated to the new HD? Persistence! I kept disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, making sure to shut the drive down by pressing the blue button on the front until the drive powered down. I disconnected, waited for some time (between ten and 20 minutes) Then I reconnected the FireWire cable first, and the power cable second, waited for it to mount - and eventually...
Wow am I happy. I'm going to run a series of diagnostics on this one but I'm probably going to retire it. Too bad because 500 gigs is a lot of space to loose, but this being the second occurrence makes parting all the easier. I mean, my entire iTunes library is on this thing!
So, just keep trying - plug the drive into the computer, then connect the power cable and wait for it to come on.
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.4 and an older machine 10.4.11, both of which were able to read this drive before, the 10.6.4 had the problem initially, then both machines had issues. Ultimately the 10.6 machine was successful with a FireWire 400 connection.
I hope this helps!!

My 500GB hard drive isn't working anymore

There have been issues with the western digital Mybook on the enclosure itself as the connector usually fails. The actual harddisk, however, is not damaged so you just needed to take that out and mount it to your computer or put it in another USB hard disk enclosure.

WD 500GB MyBook stopped mounting on MacBook Pro

Have you tried it in another computer? I think these kind of problems can sometimes be caused by USB voltage problems, especially if your MBP has an old battery (I believe the battery is used as a power buffer to keep size of transformer down). If that doesn't work, see if you can find someone with the same HDD power supply and try switching that over. Failing that it's data recovery, you may be able to do this yourself by switching the actual hard drive into a new enclosure.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

My hard drive just stopped working all of a sudden

Search around on this site for MyBook 500GB problems. I've responded to a couple, but it amazes me that lots of people, including myself, has a failed unit. Mine lasted 1.5 yrs and failure is caused by burned chip pins on the drive controller. Seems likely to be a heat issue. More info about what I did; see my other posts.
