Hi, we have a sharp carosel microwave oven. Just lately it heats up on the outside of the microwave while heating the food. Is it still safe to use?

I don't know the model number, sorry. It's a Sharp Carousel - bought in 2000. Everything sounds normal when it's on (just double checked). Only the outside gets hot. Strange.

Thank you for trying to help already!

Sorry, but I accidentally posted my second clarification request as a solution, and you rated it.

That hurts my ratings as an expert.

Could you look at the tag on the unit and tell me your model number, then I can check into it and see about giving you a solution?

    Thank you.

    Okay, that's an Australian model!

I would suggest visiting Sharp's Australian support site, where you can contact customer support, or find a local authorized servicer.

    Good luck.

Microwaves and how they work.

Caption
--> The microwave oven is one of the great inventions of the 20th century -- millions of homes in America have one. Just think about how many times you use a microwave every day:

Caption
-->

You're running late for work, so there's no time to fix breakfast at home. On your way to the office, you stop to gas up your car. Inside the quickie-mart, you grab a frozen breakfast burrito and pop it in the microwave on the counter. Later that day, you have to work through lunch. By 3:00 p.m., you're starving, so you grab a snack-pack of microwaveable popcorn from the vending machine and pop that in the break-room microwave. That night, after a really long day at work, you're simply too tired to grill out, so you dish up last night's lasagna and heat it up in the microwave...
As you can see, microwave ovens are popular because they cook food in an amazingly short amount of time. They are also extremely efficient in their use of electricity because a microwave oven heats only the food -- and nothing else. In this article, we'll discuss the mystery behind the magic of "meals in a minute" with microwave cooking.

A microwave oven uses microwaves to heat food. Microwaves are radio waves. In the case of microwave ovens, the commonly used radio wave frequency is roughly 2,500 megahertz (2.5 gigahertz). Radio waves in this frequency range have an interesting property: they are absorbed by water, fats and sugars. When they are absorbed they are converted directly into atomic motion -- heat. Microwaves in this frequency range have another interesting property: they are not absorbed by most plastics, glass or ceramics. Metal reflects microwaves, which is why metal pans do not work well in a microwave oven.

Microwave cooking You often hear that microwave ovens cook food "From the inside out." What does that mean? Here's an explanation to help make sense of microwave cooking.
Let's say you want to bake a cake in a conventional oven. Normally you would bake a cake at 350 degrees F or so, but let's say you accidentally set the oven at 600 degrees instead of 350. What is going to happen is that the outside of the cake will burn before the inside even gets warm. In a conventional oven, the heat has to migrate (by conduction) from the outside of the food toward the middle. You also have dry, hot air on the outside of the food evaporating moisture. So the outside can be crispy and brown (for example, bread forms a crust) while the inside is moist.

In microwave cooking, the radio waves penetrate the food and excite water and fat molecules pretty much evenly throughout the food. No heat has to migrate toward the interior by conduction. There is heat everywhere all at once because the molecules are all excited together. There are limits, of course. Radio waves penetrate unevenly in thick pieces of food (they don't make it all the way to the middle), and there are also "hot spots" caused by wave interference, but you get the idea. The whole heating process is different because you are "exciting atoms" rather than "conducting heat."
In a microwave oven, the air in the oven is at room temperature, so there is no way to form a crust. That is why microwavable pastries sometimes come with a little sleeve made out of foil and cardboard. You put the food in the sleeve and then microwave it. The sleeve reacts to microwave energy by becoming very hot. This exterior heat lets the crust become crispy as it would in a conventional oven.

My ifb microwave oven is getting hot outside while

Normally when u cook food in microwave the fod is cooked by microwaves, which means the heat is generated with in food. The temperature inside is never too hot and all the heat produced is absorbed with in the food.

On the other hand when the grill is switched on, a separate heatting element gets switched on. You can see this red hot element on the top side of inside of microwave. the heat from this element gets transferred to food through air circulation. But partof heat also gets transferred to the walls of microwave oven. This is the reason the wall feel hot during use of grill.

As i see ther is no problem with the microwave itself. Jut kep delicate thngs a bit away from the microwave.

this is the magnetron going bad and it is heating the outside and the inside(probably not so much on the inside right?) Well this is DANGEROUS now and i would no longer use it , as it is sending waves out and thats why it is getting hot , it will need professional service as microwaves are extreemly dangerous

Would not heat, now outside gets hot

yes! , this is dangerous , be cause it sounds like the magnetron that sends out the microwaves may not be controlled , thus heating the outside and will be sending waves out of the microwave!
you will need a qualified electronic repair shop to deal with this, these microwaves are very dangerous and that unit should not be used untill it has been fixed , for the safety of you and anyone who uses or is around when in use.
these microwaves that are sent across the air to heat the food is burning it and it can do the same to you or any one who is around it while in use
even when in working normal conditions the waves still leak out some , so i always walk away when heating food in the microwave and i advise others to do the same
so the magnetron will need replaced and maybe another component but it needs to be tested to make sure nothing else is damaged also
hope my help has pleased you and that you can give me a fixya rating( all others hurt our rating) as i work on these and i know the symptoms that happen and the causes
again hope you can give me the fixya! , thanks , and if you need any other help, just ask me!
