1. From Windows Updates to: "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", Set it back to: "Install updates automatically (recommended)" , restart PC, and try to update your windows.
I'm not a sir, but if you follow the directions that your OS (Vista) tells you & go to the Symantec site to look for & download the most updated drivers for the software, you should be good to go. As Vista is known for it's bugs & quirks, you may find that you will have to search out the drivers for lots of software & hardware you install. If you still get the same error after downloading & installing the driver from Symantec, you should contact Microsoft to see if there's a problem with compatability with that program or see what else the recommend.
