depending on the scanner the belt may not be broken, however the gear that it rides on may not be moving, or the belt is slipping. Some scanners the glass can be removed for you to visially see the gear and evaluate from there
Sounds like the scanner bulb is burnt out or it's not able to move the scanner sled. It should be saying "scanner error" as well. (and I think you meant unable to scan, copy or send fax) No fix unfortunately other than getting a replacement unit (which I believe now is the 8500 premiere)
If you need a replacement, your timing is good, they are $200 off right now, and selling for $299.
Your unit as it stands still makes a good printer and will receive faxes, and you CAN send a fax as long as you do it from the computer.
Please clean the scanner refflecting glasses, scanner lens,Scan bulb and Laser scaner units

Believe it or not, there probably is something in your scanner. Often times it is a very small piece of dust/fiber. If you are using the document feeder, the check the small piece of glass as the scanner bulb remains stationary and the paper is fed by. If you are laying the paper on the glass and scanning, then you will need to look at the scanner bulb itself. Run a scan with no paper and see if you see anything. If not, you can try to take it apart and clean the bulb (but do not touch the bulb with your bare fingers), with a light wipe of a tissue. If after cleaning, it either moves or goes away, then it is dust related. If it remains in the same position on the page, then there is a scanner bulb problem.
