One of your speaker wires to the internal amp is shorted. turn power off and make sure they are not touching metal or each other and then hit reset again. if this doesn't help your power ic may be fried inside the stereo or a speaker is shorted.

My stereo says protect on it n it wont let me do anything. It has an amp in the gack oft he car that is attached when i biught the car it already had this installed

This could be one of two issues. Since you aren't saying whether what brand stereo is is or model we can only conjecture at a possible cause.

1. The amplifier was over driven and went into self-protect. These usually self-correct, so it may not be the case here unless the amp is damaged.

2. The radio itself is in security mode. If the radio has a security feature (and most factory and some aftermarket units do), it power was interrupted to the unit it will lock up until an unlock code is entered. This is to prevent theft. If this is the case you need to locate and enter the unlock code to get the unit to work again. Factory units usually have a card in the vehicle literature from the dealer that gives the code. Aftermarket units provide the code with the packaging. If you don't have, didn't get, or lost this data, you'll need to contact a dealer for factory radios and find out what info you need to obtain to get the code. If it is an aftermarket unit, you will need to contact the manufacturer for the code.

there is no code. protect means you have a short in the speakers or speaker wires, or a bad output ic.

The screen says protect and it wont come off the screen or play radio or cds what do i do?

This radio is equipped with an anti-theft device, if the battery power is disconnected from the radio for more than a few minutes, it goes into lockdown or "protect" mode. The only way to get the code is to call the manufacturer with the product number and serial number, generally they will verify your identity and then provide you with the unlock code.

Protect code

make sure you have no bare or shorted speaker wires and check your speakers to make sure they are all good. if that all checks out, you probably have a bad output ic.

Solution is simple and no code is needed. Make sure all wirw are secures and not opening spliced. Ones verifying, make sure radio is turned off and reset the protect button.

The Protect Button is pin hole size and is located right above the headphone jack. Hence all shpuld be good from there on.

Reset

Protect:- The speaker wire has a short circuit, or touches the chassis of the vehicle, then the Protect function is activated. Wire or insulate the cable properly and then press the reset button. If the "Protect" code does not disappear, consult your nearest service centre.
