You need to remove the wep key from the linksys configuration
to enter the configuration of the router, in Iexplorer, go to http://192.168.1.1
there must be a security access confguration than refer to wep active/inactive
switch it off, it should go.

How to go to wifi

Wi-Fi technology enables wireless Internet and network access through public and private hot spots. These hot spots are widely located in homes, restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops and other businesses, so you can keep connected wherever you may travel. To connect to Wi-Fi, you must have an enabled wireless adapter on your computer. Most modern laptops and many desktops have this adapter built into the system, but many lack such capabilities. However, a wireless adapter is easily installed via USB, which allows you to connect to available networks through Windows 7.
Enable your wireless adapter. Most laptops have a hot key labeled with a radio antenna. Hold the "Fn" key and press this key to toggle wireless on or off. Desktops likely have a physical antenna on the back of your computer that is typically always on. If you don't see such a hot key or antenna, you need to acquire a USB wireless adapter. Attach the USB wireless adapter to an available USB port on your computer. Windows 7 will automatically install the necessary drivers for most adapters. If it does not, insert the CD that came with the USB wireless adapter into your drive and choose to install their drivers. Restart your computer if you do not see a wireless icon in your Windows 7 notification area. Click the wireless icon in the Windows 7 notification area and click the network name to which you want to connect. If this is your home network, the correct network will likely be the one with the strongest signal. Click "Connect" and enter the wireless security passphrase, if required. Only secured networks will ask for a passphrase, but some public networks will require browser authentication instead. Open your browser and navigate to any website. If the hot spot requires browser authentication, your website request is redirected to an information page. Follow the instructions on this page to get Wi-Fi. This may entail clicking "Accept," entering a given password or entering a cell phone number. After authentication, attempt your website again to verify accessibility. Hope this helps

On my computer, i know exeactly where my WEP key is located. I know it's eight characters long but it's locked on my computer. All I see are eight security dots and the 'show characters' option is blanked...

You cannot retrieve or see the security key on the computer. There are software available but you may have to search for them if its free. This key can be retrieved from the wireless transmitter known as the access point or wireless modem or wireless router. Open the router web interface on a wired connection. This interface will not open on a wireless connection. After opening, under the wireless section, click on security and there you can see your WEP or WPA or WPA2 key written.

Thanks and regards,
If you have any further clarifications, revert!

Philips CGA5722 MODEM what is the WEP / WPA key and where can it be found? I have wireless transmission but need the key for my modem

The WEP and WPA are 2 most common encryptions found in wireless connections. The keys controlling them were inputted by you during the setting of the wireless router and are needed every time you connect to it. If you don't want the hassle and you don't use that pc for critical information (like banking), you can simply stop the encryption altogether.

I was told to access 192.168.0.1 to make my computer secure but am not sure what steps to take

I am assuming you are talking about a wireless router and are asking how to secure it.

First, plug your computer DIRECTLY to the router via an ethernet cable.

http://192.168.0.1
http://192.168.1.1

One of the above addresses should open the configurations of your router. If you open the configuration, you will be prompted to input a password/username.

If you do not know the "default" username/password, then look at the following link to find your router.
http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

If there has already been a password change and you do not know the password, you will have to reset your router. You can reset your router by looking at the back of it for a reset button and holding it in for about 10 or so seconds with it powered on. The reset button is usually pretty small and requires a ball point pen or something small tipped to press it. Resetting the router puts all settings back to factory default...including password.

Okay, now you should have access to the configurations of the router.

Things you want to change:
1. Password for the router
2. Under "wireless"options, change it so that it uses encryption like WEP or WPA.
3. Disable any options for "remote management".

When you added encryption, if you were connected wirelessly...you got booted off the router. That is why you need to connect via an ethernet cable. You will need to go back to your wireless settings in router and copy down the WEP/WPA "security key" it randomly made up. Some routers have you make the security key up yourself, so there would be no need to go look it up on the router.

Take the above security key and input it when you go to connect to your wireless connection and are prompted to input the "security key". Without the security key, you can not access the router.

Those are the basics to securing your router. There are more advanced tactics, but offer little to no protection if someone has bypassed the WEP/WPA encryption. If a person knows how to bypass the security key, then they more than likely also know how to bypass things like MAC Address filtering.

There is no real protection from a hacker, nothing is hack proof. The most you can do is make it that much harder for someone to gain access to your network or computer.

Hope this answered your question.

Need my wireless SSID Name & Network key

The SSID is simply the name of the WiFi Network, the Network Key or WEP/WAP Key, is generated when you first setup a WiFi point, For the first time you must copy this key to a document & use it when you try to first login, to the WiFi network. So the only place that information can be found is in the WiFi's setup.

I have a linksys wrt300n wireless router and an Intel WiFi 4689(?)abgn wireless adapter. Can some one tell me why my connection speed fluctuated between 30 and 130mbps with excellent signal and how I can...

Do you this set to wap, What is the security that you are using,
if you did not set a security and it is open, anyone can be using your signal. wep can be hacked very easily.

Now, how do you know if is fluctuating, are you going by speed test
or by downloading, either way you will always get different speeds
depending on the website you are accessing, there is always speed changes to the internet depending on your ISP and the traffic that is
using it.

Please is there any WEP or WAP key that I can freely use on my lap top with my USP adapter BN-WD54G?

Any encryption key will be specific to a network so no there is not a free universal key. If you find a non encrypted network like at Panera Bread Co. then you don't need a key.

  • You can connect a computer to your linksys (if there isn't one already connected) and open a web browser.
  • In the address bar you can type in 192.168.1.1 and push the enter key on your keyboard
  • when it prompts for a password leave the username blank and use admin for your password.
  • you can then go to your wireless settings and view or change our wep key.

Im twelf and need a walkthrough on how to find my wep key

open your internet explorer and type in on the address bar: 192.168.1.1.if it asks for a username and password, type admin for usernamepassword for password (all lower case)what you will see then is the configuration page of your modem. since you did not include your modem's brand on your post, you can search for your wep key under wireless connection or wireless security.
