Question about D-Link AirPlus DI-524 Wireless Router

Can't connect with my router

I had a post about not being able to connect my laptop to my wireless connection after installing a new modem. You posted an answer that I needed to pull a new ip on the lappy. Well, clearly that won't solve. The lappy automatically pulls the ip from the desktop. I don't need to pull a new ip on the desktop, because it is already online. Anymore suggestions?? THANKS! Peggy

The laptop CAN NOT have the same IP address of the desktop because is another station.
The IP address is generated automatically from your wireless router, one different for each computer that you have on the network.

For that reason you have to renew the ip on your laptop.

Hi, Confirm if you can go online through the modem direclty. If yes then please connect te modem to the internet port on the router and a computer to one of the 4 ports on the router and check for internet access. if this works then the issue lies on the wireless configuration of the router.

Please let me know if you can go online wired to the router or not and also specify the operating system installed on the laptop.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

Does a router or combo need to be connected to computer?

As you already have the modem you only need a router. In all cases the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.

I think your best bet surely would be to go for a wireless router though? Then you wouldnt have to trail ethernet cables all round the house. I'm sure your laptop has a wireless adaptor built in unless it;s very old.

I always use Netgear networking stuff so forgive me posting a link to a nice 54G wireless router :-) :

Hi,

Other than the laptop and the LinkSys WRT54G, you would need an active account/subscription with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who then will provide you with a modem of sort.

On initial setup, connect your modem to your laptop and verify that you can connect to the Internet. Thereafter run the CD installer that came with the LinkSys before connecting/powering the LinkSys. Follow on screen instruction. At one point in the installation, you would be asked to disconnect the modem, connect the router and connect the modem to the router.

Should for some reason the above instruction will not address your concern, pls post back.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Laptop

Hi,

It really depends on what "modem" Orange provided you with and how your personal PC is connected to the modem.

If the "modem" provided by Orange uses WiFi (such as Livebox) networking, then it is a matter of setting up your daighter's laptop to access and use the Livebox WiFi Network. In this case no router is needed since your modem is also a router.

If your PC is connected via Ethernet port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" is a single Ethernet output port, you would need an AP/Router (Wireless since I am presuming the your daughter's laptop would be accessing the Internet wirelessly) such as the LinkSys WRT54G.

If your PC is connected via USB port to the "modem" and Orange's "modem" has only a USB output port (no Ethernet), you need to make your PC as the default gateway/software router and share your PC's Internet connection. If you are connecting your daughter's laptop using Ethernet cable, then you don't need a WiFi AP/Router but an ordinary hub. If on the other hand the new laptop would connect wirelessly, you would still need something like the WRT54G.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post again how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Linksys Modem

Hi,

To confirm that your PC is connected to the router, open a browser and type 192.168.1.1; In most older LinkSys routers, the default username is none/blank and the default password is "admin." Most current Linksys routers,  the username and the password are  "admin."  Once inside the configuration page, click on "Status"; Verify that your Internet Connection has got some numbers such as IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS & MTU.

If none, your router cannot connect to the cable modem, if yes, pls post back the numbers/details. Further, pls add brand/model of your cable modem and your ISP.

In the meantime, you may have to check that all the cables are correctly plug in and that your cable modem & router are getting power from the mains.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back with additional information.  Good luck and kind regards.
