Question about Dell - NPS-460BB-B (NPS460BBB) Power Supply

Dell Power supply NPS-460BB needing to upgrade

Is there a direct replacement for my NPS-460bb on a XPS Gen 4? I want/need to upgrade to around 750W. Can I just open the current power supply and replace the guts with the guts of a 750W (or higher)?

Its a desktop. I just got a new video card (Radeon HD 4870 X2) and it needs a 650 Watt or greater power supply with one 2x3-pin PCIe® power
connector and one 2x4-pin PCIe® power connector. And of course I only have the 460 Watt with one 2x3 connector. And the power supply on my XPS is a part of the base of the system.

Thanks for the super fast response Leecom72! Looks like i have a new project to dig into.

I just bought the same exact video card, except mine calls for a 750W power supply with at least one 2x3 and one 2x4 PCIe power connectors. Dell has no upgrade to speak of, so I've called around and due to the awkward shape and placement of the power supply finding a replacement elsewhere is becoming increasingly difficult. I even read one post somewhere online where somebody said he saw a dell get fried once because of a new power supply being too good. I'm guessing it must have been the amperage being too high. Anyway my best idea as of yet is to build a base for my desktop and hold the new power supply outside with the cords going into my computer case. Hopefully you guys can find somebody who can sell parts compatible with Dell's ackwardness. I will never buy another dell after this, that is for sure.

Dell XPS GEN3 completely dead. Checked all cables and connections.PSU spun upon two occasions but when I re-open the case ,nothing works. Tried shorting the soft power on to ground.NADA. No fans No...

I'm not sure if your unit is a laptop or tower but I've seen this albeit rarely, on older models of both. I've seen a small microswitch on the frame in an inconspicuous spot that would disable the unit altogeather. I'm guessing as a primative form of tamperproofing the unit. This may not be your case but if it is, the switch might be loose, damaged or the metal lever may be bent / out of adjustment. If it's there, it will be somewhere out of sight or may be actuated by a small rod that will be moved when the cover is put back into place.
Another posibility if yours is a tower, the 115 / 230 volt switch in the back near the power plug may be out of place or dirty inside. UNPLUG the unit and flip the switch back and forth several times. Be sure to place the switch back to the approprate setting for the country you are in.
How do you measure power under no load? If yours is a tower and if you don't know what you're doing, DO NOT touch anything inside the supply!!! Most are switching supplies and develope several hundred volts only to be regulated down later in the circuit. VERY DANGEROUS!!!
None of this may apply to you but this has been my experience. I can only hope your problem is something as simple as these were.
Good luck,
Jeff Mc.

How i can check the dell nps-460bb power supply working or not?

If there is a light on it and its on, its a start, if you have a volt meter u can get a reading from the conection that goes into computer. check the pins inside this conection with a pen see if they are loose, another way is to place the black box againts ur ear firmly listen carefully for a hum, if its hummmming then its working, if the charger aint pwoering the laptop check the conection that goes into laptop for any loose parts, another problem can be the laptops conection its self , give it a sligh push to one side or the other to see if it lights up the laptop, or try it in another laptop that uses the same conection.

hope this helps in some way.

Hi brendanram!

I am claudus_07 and i was a Dell - XPS Technical Support Specialist before so i will be glad to assist you with your concern.

As you said into your post, you tried plugging the AC Adapter to the power source without plugging the other end into the XPS laptop and the Green Light on the adapter is lit. But when you plug the jack on the laptop, the Green light is out. As for my experience on your laptop, there could be a problem with the power supply or the motherboard of your XPS laptop. Because everytime you plug the adapter to the laptop, the green light is going out so it means that the laptop or the adapter is grounded.

Here's what you need you to:

Step 1: Call Dell XPS Technical Support 1-800-624-9896
Step 2: Tell them the issue and the things that youve done.
Step 3: At the end of the troubleshooting, i know that the Technician will either replace the Power Supply, Motherboard, or the Adapter. (if you have a friend that has a Adapter same as yours, you may try to use it just to isolate the issue the Technician will choose from the Power Supply or the motherboard)
Step 4: If the Technician replaces the power supply and the issue still persists, call technical support again and ask them to replace the motherboard, no need to repeat the troubleshooting steps anymore just tell them that youre already done with it. (Dont ask for a system exchange, because i know that they will not give what you want.)

I know it will work. Be Positive!
Your good rating will be very much appreciated.

Good luck and thank you!
