Question about Black & Decker 22" Electric Hedge Trimmer

1 Answer

I have the black and decker 22" hedge trimmer.  I haven't used it more than say 3 times.  All of a sudden as I am trimming a bush, it goes out.  I tried a different plug, extension cord, etc.  and it still doesn't work.  So I know it is the unit.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

If you only used it three times from new then I would take it back to where I bought it.

New B&D 22-inch hedge trimmer will not turn on. Power cord is plugged in and tried on multiple outlets.

Its time to return it and get another one. You should never try any thing on a unit that is under warranty. Thanks

How to Sharpen a Black and Decker Hedge Hog sharpen-black-decker-hedge-hog-800x800.jpg Maintaining the sharpness of electric timmers can made landscape trimming easier with beautiful results.

Electric hedge trimmers make trimming hedges and bushes easier and quicker than using manual hand-powered trimmers. Electric trimmers, the most popular type in the U.S., cost less and require less maintenance than gasoline-powered models. Electric trimmers are used most often by homeowners with the Black and Decker Hedge Hog series being very popular. While they are not premium products, electric trimmers like the Black and Decker Hedge Hog trimmer can keep trimming reliably for years with proper maintenance, including sharpening the blade's teeth.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need

  • Work table
  • Two medium size clamps
  • Dremel tool or similar hand-held multi-purpose tool
  • Grinding wheel attachment for hand-held tool.
  • Dremel 971 (or similar) aluminum oxide grinding sharpening stone with a tip small enough to cover the flat facet of a Hedge Hog blade tooth
    • 1 Unplug the electric trimmer before trying to sharpen the teeth.
    • 2 Clamp the electric trimmer to the work table using two clamps if necessary so the Hedge Hog is firmly held down with the blade teeth accessible over the edge of the work table.
    • 3 Insert and secure grinding tip in hand-held multi-purpose tool.
    • 4 Maneuver the grinding tip so it is perpendicular to the facet of the Hedge Hog tooth.
    • 5 Sharpen teeth in one direction, being careful to try and maintain the same cutting edge angle on the sharpened tooth of no less than 35 degrees.
    • 6 Make same number of grinding passes/grind the same length of time a few seconds on each tooth.
Tips & Warnings
  • This task should take about 15 minutes.
  • Keep a light touch; too much force can break the grinding surface.
  • For best results, insert the sharpening bit slightly less than all the way into the tool.

When i was trimming the motor stopped. I was told an electric trimmer cannot be fixed. true or false.

False, almost everything can be fixed unless it is so old you can find replacement parts. However, seeing that you are talking about a $40 hedge trimmer it would probably be cheaper to buy another unit. Black and Decker parts are available online, search by the model number or product number, not the name.

Black & Decker GT370-GT371 20 inch hedge trimmer - electrical fault in front handle causing difficulty in starting/resuming cutting. There is no local servicing and help from B&D was restricted...

Your best bet would be to use http://www.eReplacementParts.com as a source to get your Black and Decker parts and than use their tool repair forum and submit this question. They have licensed mechanics that repair these things all the time, so I'm sure they could put together an easy fix.

Black & Decker Hedge Hog 24-Inch Hedge Trimmer. Motor runs, but blades don't move. Is there a sheer pin that I can replace, or is the thing bound for the dump?

You can definitely pick up a sheer pin for that model. I know ereplacementparts.com has them usually pretty discounted, or just check out a local store, but make sure they are in stock.

Describe your Black & Decker Hedge Hog

You may have a piece of metal between the moving blade and the stationary one. Also the motor may have been at the top of the stroke when it stopped. You may be able to "force" the blade to move a little. This may free it enough to work.
