Yes, more-so than in a conventional crt based unit without all the extras... You'll need to disconnect many more wires and attachments to get the main board removed then it's about the same job to de-solder the detector and solder a new one in... If you need, take pictures from several different positions in case you stumble getting it back together and can't figure out were a set of wires go to or something. I would order the Ir sensor before you start the job, p/n# 72796410 maybe from Vance Baldwin...

Testing remote control:
The remote control puts out IR (InfraRed) signal that human eyes cannot see, to find out if the remote is sending out the signal or not you just point the remote at the digital camera's Lens (Digital Camera can detect IR), you should see flashing light on the camera's screen when any one of the remote button is pushed. If you do see the flashing on the camera, then the problem is in the TV IR receiver or the main logic board; more troubleshooting with scope will be needed to look at the signals.

You need to find out if it is the remote or the IR receiver in the TV is bad.

I think the infrared reciever in the TV isn't picking up the remotes signal It won't go on standby or put sound up or down etc I have a Thomson TV/DVD 17 inch .

Make sure that the remote is working by pointing your remote to a IR sensor or use the phone camera to detect -- open the phone camera/digital camera and show the remote with button pressed on to the camera as it will be displayed if IR works.
If so then the IR detector in the TV must be taken out , checked and replaced. You can measure the incident voltage on the IR sensor in the TV if present but not sensing it is faulty but if working without any action then the processor is also a suspect.

My receiver doesn't receive any signal from the remote control

First of all check your remote with a IR tester. You can use your phone camera with the remote pointed to it for IR detection. This will confirm the remote. Now make sure that there is no loose components in the remote that have come off the board and changed the frequency. If so remove and re-solder.
Now check the IR detector in the receiver, use a multimeter to check the voltage on the IR detection as the remote is used. If there is no voltage check and change the IR, if not the signal track must be traced to the processor.- suspect the processor.

Infared won't work unless room is brightly lit

Just to provide clarification regarding the IR remote control- unfortunately its the opposite. A brightly lit room can negatively affect the infrared signal the remote uses to transmit the signal from the remote to the receiver- additionally interference may also be caused by fluorescent lighting. Another recommendation regarding IR signal interference is to; power everything off but leave the receiver & your TV on. Then proceed by powering one component on at a time, then testing the remote after each component has successfully been turned on. This process will also help you determine if a component may be causing the interference. Hope this helps! -Kirstie DISH Network

Remote is not working but tv is working manually

Open the remote controller and clean well .Make sure the crystal oscillator and controller IC is having goos soldering but you can resolder on them. make sure the battery terminals also are good, solder all suspected joints. Place the battery and check the battery and detect a voltage rise when you press any key- an IR detector can be useful connected to a multimeter.- If so fit back and test. If you can open the tv and check the IR detection in the TV you can confirm if the signals are coming in or not. However in some cases there will be detection but the frequency would have varied due to the crystal or controller Ic being out of value. Hope you check this out. Good day

1934 model recieving

cthy_prry,

The IR detector is in your TV set. It is the device that picks up or captures the IR signal from your remote control and turns it into an electrical signal that the TV via a processor interprets as a function or command to have the TV perform in a certain way as turning on, channel up or down, volume up or down, etc.

IR means Infrared

I hope this answers your question.

Thank you,
