My usb ports stop working and then are ok again?

Hello there, I am the computer technician that will be assisting you today. My name is Norman-Wynne Damstra.

Welcome to Fixya, Madgoody.

This is a software fault, specifically with drivers for the USB 2.0 controller of your notebook.

You will need to do the following:
1.) Right click My Computer and select properties.
2.) Click the Hardware Tab and clcik Device Manager.
3.) Find the heading: Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
4.) Click the + next to the USB heading.
5.) Right click on USB Root Hub and click properties.
6.) Now click the driver tab and click Update driver.

Select the option for this time only and click next.
A driver should be found automatically.

You could also go to your notebook manufacturers website, Compaq and search for drivers using your model number 6730b. Then download the USB drivers.

Take care!

Hello I have a dell lattitude cpi a series laptop. I would like to get the usb working again with the 2.0 usb wirless plug in dongle. It did work before. Now when I plug in the usb device it tells me to...

IT sounds like you need to download and install the driver for the WPN111. If you recently did a clean install of the operating system, it would have been removed with the clean install. The WPN11 is a Net gear product and you can get the driver from their website. The message that appears for plugging into a usb 2.0 hub you can just close that out. It is just informing you that it will perform better plugged into the usb 2.0. The existing usb on the CPi is usb 1.1

Non of the 3 USB ports works anymore for unknown reason

ok, the answer is pretty simple, ur usb ports connect to a internal hub, that hub is what has malfunctioned, u need to reinstall that device's driver though the device manager on vista, go to start, type device manager in the search box, click device manager in the list, a uac query will appear, click continue, on device manager go to universal serial bus controlers and click the +, right click the usb root hub and uninstall it, repeat that for all of the usb root hubs, then restart ur pc, it will automatically reinstall the devices with a fresh driver, plug in your usb device and it should work, have a great day and happy holidays

Cant get usb device to connect

Check in your device manager to see if your USB bridge or hub is working properly. If the driver for the hub goes out you can't connect any USB devices. Right click on my computer, goto properties, hardware then device manager. Will be listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers. If there is a problem there will be a red X on the device icon.

USB ports are not working

Sounds like the power portion of the USB port is working but the data portion is not. My guess is that the drivers for the USB hub inside your machine are not installed, damaged or never installed. Check the "device manager" under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". You might be able to fix it by deleting the hub. When you power off and power back up it should find the hub and reinstall the drivers.

I am confused that my laptop is damaged

First of all, we are NOT hackers. Don't know where you got that idea, but I myself find it rather repulsive. The problem may lie in the fact your computer may be mapping your USB PenDrive the same as another drive on your computer, making it inaccessable. Now, I requested more information so that I could better assist, but you failed to provide what I asked for. To find out if your computer is dual-mapping a drive letter, you need to access Control Panels -> Adminstrative Tools -> Computer Management, and select the Disk Management at the bottom. You should be able to find the PenDrive in the Bottom Right pane, right click it, select 'Chage Drive Letter' and select an unused drive letter (perhaps M:). If that is the problem, that right there will fix it for you.

Try not to insult people next time.

Usb ports

Reinstall your USB drivers:
Navigate to Device manager, find a branch named "USB Controllers" or similar
Right click the one thats the problem (or all of them if you dont know which), select Uninstall
Reboot your machine and windows will autodetect the USBs and reinstall their drivers.
that should work, if not let me know,
thanks.
Check the BIOS and see if they are enabled...
when you start up1.gif your laptop. it will tell you what to press to run setup
Disable power management on the USB hub To preserve power, Microsoft1.gif Window XP tries to disable USB when a device is not used. Under certain circumstances this function does not work and may cause USB devices to fail to respond when called. To resolve this issue, disable power management on the USB hub by doing the following:
  1. Click Start , and right-click My Computer .
  2. Click Properties , then click Hardware .
  3. Click Device Manager .
  4. Double-click the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch to expand it.
  5. Right-click USB Root Hub , and then click Properties .
  6. Click Power Management .
  7. Deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power .
  8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 for each USB Root Hub.
  9. Click OK , and close Device Manager .
