HOW DO I IDENTIFY TYPE & MODEL OF MOTHERBOARD FOR DELL DIMENSION 3000 TO UPGRADE CPU

As posted by Smithbrother, you can't just put any motherboard in a Dell--the case and motherboard are built for each other. You would be better off buying another computer. A new motherboard means a different processor (like you want). This means a different, higher speed memory.
You can have a system built by a local computer person or browse some of the sites (you can go to Dell for some real deals--as well as other company sites).
Any new system will not have "only pci slots." The new boards will have PCI-E slots for your video, but will also have some PCI slots for expansion.
Cost? That's hard to say. I have to do an estimate for each of my clients depending on just what they want.

The Dell N2828 motherboard is supposed to have the Intel 865PE motherboard chipset on it.

Looking at the - List of Intel Chipsets - on Wikipedia, we can see that the maximum FSB supported is 800MHz,

Dell Support lists that the Dell Dimension 4600 series, can have either the Intel 845G motherboard chipset, or the Intel 845PE motherboard chipset.

As seen in the chart the Intel 865G motherboard chipset, also supports up to an 800MegaHertz Front Side Bus.

The processor socket is a Socket 478.

I see that Weirdstuff.com, (Surplus warehouse) has Pentium 4's available with an 800MHz FSB.

Looks like the best they have is a Pentium 4 at 2.60GHz, 512MB cache, 800MHz FSB for $18.95 (US. They're located in California)

The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge/Southbridge chipset.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C., or Integrated Circuit.

As you can see in the chart, the Northbridge chip handles the high speed processes of a computer.
Such as the Processor, Ram Memory, and high speed graphics.

AGP and PCI Express being high speed graphics. Any graphics card inserted into a PCI slot is Not high speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower processes of a computer.
Anything to do with PCI, or Integrated Graphics, being two of the slower processes.

Therefore if you know what Northbridge chip you have on the motherboard, and what processor socket, you are pretty well on your way to know what processors your motherboard supports.

The Northbridge chip is under that 'meat cleaver' looking heatsink next to the processor socket.

If the heatsink were removed, and any thermal paste also removed, you would see - Intel 82865PE stamped on it.

Not a good idea to remove the heatsink, without having fresh thermal paste to replace the old thermal paste with, PLUS the top of the Northbridge chip, And the bottom of the heatsink needs to be THOROUGHLY cleaned Before applying new, fresh thermal paste.

The Southbridge chip has Intel ICH5, or ICH5R on it.

Follow the procedures outlined and be sure to clean the surface of the heat-sink (alcohol works) and reapply thermal grease compound to the surface of the new processor.
