Question about Garmin GPS

While trying to put a new mapset on my Garmin iQue3600, I keep getting this message: Mapsource was unable to place the mapset (GMAPSUPP.IMG)in the Hotsync queue, so the new map set was not successfully saved. This error can occur if there is not enough space left on the hard drive. The map set is 150Mb, I have 12Gb available on the hard drive. Any Ideas?

While trying to put a new mapset on my Garmin iQue3600, I keep getting this message:

Mapsource was unable to place the mapset (GMAPSUPP.IMG)in the Hotsync queue, so the new map set was not successfully saved. This error can occur if there is not enough space left on the hard drive.

The map set is 150Mb, I have 12Gb available on the small hard drive and 800 Gb on the other. Any Ideas?

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

The memory card is 2Gb and empty

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

Tried all of those with no effect

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

Yes I tried only 50Mb of maps. I have another card with almost 2 Mb of maps on it. This is a new problem to me.

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

I have tried maps which have loaded before, I tried all of the obvious solutions.

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

I have had the iQue for 6 years and have loaded all sorts of variations of maps in the past. I checked the Garmin pages before coming to this forum, I sent them a help request but they have not responded.

  • joemarsden Nov 20, 2008

I dont understand this solution, the iQue will only accept maps through Mapsource or MapInstall, both of which I have tried.

  • joemarsden Nov 27, 2008

None of these solutions have helped. I did an uninstall and reinstall on the large drive and succeded in getting it to load once. A second attempt failed with the same message there is 838Gb free on the drive so there is no shortage of space, my C: drive has 14.4GB free.

Frankly I am not impressed by your so called experts.

Did you try loading a different map maybe the map type  might not be supported. try loading the map using some other device and then use the card on this one.

Hi,

A couple of ideas you can try:

  • increase % available for the "Recycle Bin";
  • increase your Swap File size;
  • delete contents your Temp folder both in Documents & Settings and C:\Windows;
  • perform a Disk Cleanup.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

I have lost all UK & Europe mapping - except for major roads. This was initially built in to unit. Have SD card for Australia & New Zealand - this works fine.

The maps are stored in specific mapset files with *.img extension in the flash memory of the GPS unit. Each mapset file contains one or many maps in it. Beside that, the Garmin GPS navigator can also recognise and load up one additional mapset file from SD card residing in the "Garmin" folder and named as "gmapsupp.img".

Here are the mapset files supported by Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS navigator:
  • gmapbmap.img - the default base map
  • gmapprom.img - the primary mapset
  • gmapprom1.img - the secondary mapset
  • gmapoem.img - the OEM mapset that cannot be unselect by user (if it exist)
  • gmapsupp.img - the supplemental mapset which you can have one in the GPS flash memory and another one in the attached SD card.
Therefore, the Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS supports up to 6 mapset files, including 1 in SD card. Normally new maps installed by the user will be stored in gmapsupp.img.

You will lost all the maps in the previous mapset file if it is overwritten by a new file with same filename. If you want to keep the existing maps, ensure that you store the mapset file with an unused filename (from the 5 filenames above). Alternatively, you can make use of special tools to merge new maps into existing mapset file.

You can view the name of your base map in Tools > Settings > System > About > Basemap.

You can view the name of maps in the other mapset files in Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info. There, you can tell the GPS to load the map by checking on its name, or not to use the map by unchecking it.

In case there are 2 or more non-overlaping maps available for the same location, the map with the highest priority number (defined in the map itself) will be used by the GPS.

Note that certain map which are locked by vendor need a 25 bytes unlock key stored in a *.unl file in the same folder and with the same name as the mapset file where the locked map is stored in.

How do I update the maps?

TO GET 2009 MAP IS NOT EASY! Software update is, from the site you can update software easily BUT THE MAP... you must purchase fro $69.99 OR if you're a technical person who knows the following instruction you can save some $$$

search
CNNANT2009-1 MapID 396

Use these instructions if you have downloaded it.

Download these first:
cgpsmapper.exe
gmaptool.exe
MapSetToolKit.exe
and MapSource where u can directly get from Garmin site
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Create these folders on the root drive: (I will choose one to make things easier, you can change)
C:/grmtmp
C:/grmtmp/extract

Connect your GPS to USB, and BACKUP then remove
X:/Garmin/gmapprom.img and gmapprom.sum (may be gmapsupp.[img+sum]) approx. 1GB

1) Copy gmapsupp.img from this torrent to C:/grmtmp;
2) Extract gmaptool.exe, cgpsmapper.exe and mapsettoolkit.exe to C:/grmtmp/extract
3) Open a command prompt, and navigate to the extract folder ("cd/grmtmp/extract")
4) Run "gmaptool -S ../gmapsupp.img" Note that is -(CAPITAL S), lower case s is for different option
5) The above will extract files, you will get some warnings about 10 degrees. Ignore them.
6) Run "cgpsmapper mapset00.mp"
7) Run "MapSetToolKit"
8) In MapSetToolKit, press "Install A Existing Mapset"
8a) TDB File: "mapset00.tdb
8b) Overview map: "mapset00.img"
8c) Registry name: "WhateverYouWant" (I did "Grm2009.1Update")
8d) Leave TYP files blank, and hit "Install"
9) Close MapSetToolKit and run MapSource
10) Ignore any requests to unlock map, not ready yet.
11) Go to "Utilities-Get Unit ID" and Find Device with your GPS plugged in USB. Write down Unit ID.
12) Run Garmin Unlock Utility, Enter that Unit ID at the top.
13) Select under "Select Map Product"
14) Ender 396 for the FID/MapID, use the Generate button to get 25char code.
15) In MapSource go to "Utilities-Manage Map Products"
16) Go to "Unlock Regions" Tab, and hit "Add...", enter 25char code, comment optional
17) Now on the main MapSource screen, type 'm' to enable map tool.
18) You should see a large white rectangle, with rectangle outlines (these represent NA maps)
19) Click and drag to select them all, you can click "Map Set Name" if wanted.
20) Click the "Send to Device" button. Wait an hour. Enjoy.

Having a problems with uploading maps to gps

HOW TO INSTALL CN NA 2009NT ON A STREETPILOT C330
The CN NA 2009 NT mapset is too large to be installed in the C330 without putting part of it onto an SD card. My recommendation is to build an image file containing the lower 49 states, PR & the USVI and upload it into the internal memory as a new 'gmapprom.img' file, and then build a new 'gmapsupp.img' file for an SD card containing Alaska & Canada.
Start the process by using MapSource to create a new 'gmapsupp.img' file, choosing the lower 49 states plus PR/USVI. Make sure that the total mapset size is no more than 975MB (930MiB) MAXIMUM. Anything that's very much larger will cause the installation to fail, due to insufficient internal memory. Note: Even though MapSource lists the mapset size in "MB", it actually measures it in "MiB". DO NOT EXCEED 930.0 MAPSET SIZE AS LISTED IN MAPSOURCE! (Can you get away with "just a little bit more"? Yes, you can, but why push it when you can simply put the rest on an SD card? Otherwise, you'll spend 40 minutes uploading it to your C330, only to have it fail at 99%. No fun... )
After selecting these maps tiles, choose 'Transfer > Send to Device...', but do NOT select your C330 as the destination for your new 'gmapsupp.img' file; instead, choose to send it to a blank 1GB (or larger) SD card plugged into one of your USB ports by way of an appropriate adapter (or to the 'C:\Garmin\' folder on your primary hard drive if you're running a specially-modified MapSource executable). MapSource will automatically create a 'Garmin' folder on your SD card and create your new 'gmapsupp.img' file within it.
Once you've successfully accomplished this task, copy the new 'gmapsupp.img' file to your hard drive's 'C:\Garmin\' folder (unless that's where you sent it in the first place, as noted above), then re-name it 'gmapprom.img'.
Next, repeat the process, selecting Alaska plus all Canadian provinces instead. Do NOT select any of the U.S. map tiles you selected the first time around. Capiche? This time, however, after creating the new 'gmapsupp.img' file on your SD card, do NOT copy it to your hard drive and do NOT re-name it. Just plug your SD card into your C330.
Finally, we're almost ready to upload the first file you created -- now called 'gmapprom.img' -- into your C330. First, we have to make sure you have a copy of Garmin's WebUpdater package installed. Open your 'C:\Garmin\' folder. Is there a 'WebUpdater' folder there? Yes? Great! Look inside and you should see a file named 'WebUpdater.exe'. If you've got it, you're almost there.
You don't have WebUpdater installed? Go get it and install it; it's a free download from Garmin. I'm using Windows XP; be sure to get the Windows version that's right for you. (To the best of my knowledge, this procedure does not work on a Mac. Sorry... ) http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
Now that you've got it installed, do the following:
- Right-click on an unoccupied area of your Windows Desktop; when the menu pops up, choose 'New', then 'Text Document'.
- Double-click this document; this will open up a brand new blank document in NotePad (or whichever text editor you've chosen).
- Copy and paste the following line of text into it...

C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\gmapprom.img -autorun usb /i

- Select 'File > Save' then 'File > Exit'.
- Re-name the file to 'C330_Map_Update.BAT'
- With the C330 connected to the PC by USB (your drivers have already been installed previously, yes???), double-click on your new 'C330_Map_Update.BAT' file.
- Sit and watch as the WebUpdater application opens up a command-line window and copies your new 'gmapprom.img' mapset into your C330!
- It will take approximately 35-40 minutes if all goes well.
-Don't forget, you'll need to have previously entered your 25-character unlock code into MapSource. That unlock code must be specific to your C330; just because your Nuvi's unlock code allows you to create mapsets in MapSource doesn't mean that those mapsets will work in your C330!
