thanks I've tried the 'hold for 15 secs' thing which didn't work

Ive no back up on memory stick

The problem is not power lead related im affraid

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the data onto a PC via the HD

I take it it's not a case of simply exchanging the one HD for another

    cheers

Ok, to remove ur game, shut down the ps3 and turn off the power switch in the back of the machine (left hand side).

Now on the front of the console, put ur finger on the power button and hold it there for 15 seconds, and without releasing ur finger, turn the switch back on behind the machine. This is supposed to release the cd.
To remove the hard disk, there is a cover on the left side of ur ps3, pop it open and remove the screw there. Then slide the HD out and remove the 4 screws there to release the HD.

Before doin any of this, try another power cord if u can on ur console first, as this is an issue with ps3's.
As far as i know u can't swap info on the HD because u don't mention if u saved a backup first on a memory stck. Maybe u can plug it into a PC and try copying the info to a memory stick which u then can insert into ur new ps3.
Hope this helps.

u can change the HD for another if u wish, at same time u will have more space, but can't answer that question because u don't really mention wut the problem IS.

Just have it exchanged and as for the data, well if ur getting a new system, u can't keep ur old drive so u can't keep the old data.
Unless u try putting it into a pc and copying its contents, tho im not sure if the pc can read or copy ps3 data as its not the same language.
    good luck

My Ps3 keeps freezing up but only on 1 game. I've already tried switching disc with the same game. Can you help?

If it's freezing with the same game it means either one or two things.

Your game data is corrupt, fix them by deleting all instances of the game under Game Data. Make sure you backup your game saves to an external usb drive just in case.

2nd possible reason is you've got a bad sector on your hard drive, if the above doesn't work then I would suggest you swap out your hard drive with a new one. 320gb drives from Best Buy for for $50 so it's a pretty cheap fix ;)

My ps3 says hard disk not found when I turn on the console. What does this mean? It worked fine earlier today?

It's possible the Internal HD died. I would call Sony and check if you are still under warranty. They should send oyu a new one in that case.

If you are not under warranty, you can look it into replacement HDs. The PS3 has a relatively easy compartment for swapping the hard drive, so this shouldn't be difficult, but you would have to buy a new one.

My ps3 will play dvds and ps2 games but wont play ps3 games or blueray dvds

Hi, the problem you are having is with the bluray part of the dvd drive the only way of getting this sorted will be to replace the whole dvd drive, first check if you have any warranty before you let anyone do any work on it if you have warranty then you should be covered, check on the ps3 site about how much warranty sony offer from new.

if you have no warranty left then you need to find someone who knows how and what to do, their are several different dvd drives for the ps3 so this will need checking before you buy a new dvd drive, then once you have got the right drive its not just a case of taking the old out and putting the new in what you need to do is take the main circuit board off your old drive and swap this with the one on the new drive. the reason you have to do this is when the ps3 was put together the dvd drive and the main circuit board in the ps3 where married, ie these parts were joined together with software now as sony have done this you cant just change the whole dvd drive over as the new one wont be recognised by your ps3 as it will have the firmware of another ps3 serial number so you need to change the circuit board off the bottom of your dvd drive and swap this onto the new dvd drive, than when you fit the drive your ps3 will think its the old drive and it will then be working.

its not easy to do and its difficult just to take the ps3 apart so be warned.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

My ps3 is showing the loading disc but never loads the game discs go in and out the drive ok and everything seems normal just wont play will it need a new drive or can this be repared ?

*NOTE* some of the steps require you to open up your ps3 which will void warranty. so if your ps3 is still under warranty give sony a call for they'll fix it for free. also before you open up your ps3 make sure you can play downloaded games and demo thats on your hard drive. if you can do this then you know you don't have a problem with your nand chip which is a BIG BIG problem... can you hear your drive spinning? read on

what you have is a problem thats hard to diagnose.
the easiest thing you can try is to clean the lens.

along with checking the cables that connect your drive to the motherboard and etc..

if that didn't work you can try replacing the whole drive -- *NOTE* if you do change the drive make sure you buy the right type and also when u buy a new drive you will be getting the drive/moter/lens only and not the control board that is attached underneath . you'll have to put your old control board onto the new drive. most of the problem will be fixed by replacing the drive n hope yours will be one of them...

hopefully you get your drive working after these steps if not you will be getting into more complicated fixes.

this is one of the sites that i come across alot that fixes different ps3 problems

if you still want to fix it yourself......
still if that didn't work you may need to replace couple of things on the drive board which can get very technical. very technical because in 2 ways.

1) your ic chip -- which controls the dvd drive mainly the motor -- may be bad and you could try replacing that on your control board but that involves desoldering/soldering near many other component of the board. very trickly but doable. on the scale from 1 to 10 10 being very hard it'll be a 9.

2)if after you replaced the chip and it still didn't work you may have more than 1 problem on your control board in which case you need a new control board but the thing is there is another chip that (the nand chip which holds the firmware of your ps3) is married to mother board and without that chip your ps3 will not read/load/operate/insert/take any of the disk or downloaded games on your ps3 hard drive. so just swapping the control board won't work. So you'll have to buy a new control board and swap out the nand chip.

again very technical and not for a novice. even some repair shops send it off to do these fixes to a more specialist if your ps3 is still under warranty its just best to send it off to sony and let them fix it for free. they cover your system for a year from the date of purchase. and you may or may not get your original system back. check youtube for "replacing ic chip on ps3" or "replacing nand chip on ps3" you'll find that some people have actually fixed their systems.

Yes, the hard drives can be swapped out. They do have to be the same type though.
Seagate SATA 2.5" hard drive
If you go with a different brand you may have compatibility issues.

From what I can tell you have 3 options;

1. Return it to the store for a new one (depends on warranty and purchase date)

2. If you have been surfing with it you might have a virus and need to do a scan (hard to do since you can't really access your hard drive)

3. Hard drive is corrupt (forget virus scan and swap hard drive with a new, bigger, better one)

I would go for option one. If not, try option 3.
