Question about Maytag Washing Machines
The error code is not 5 D it is "S" as in Sierra D. The letters stand for Slow Drain.
I had this code and it was fixed in 10 minutes or less.
Simply remove the bottom panel from the front of the washer. You do this by removing the three screws at the very bottom of the front panel. There is a screw on the bottom left, bottom right, and bottom middle.
Once the screws are removed the front panel should drop down slightly, and then you can remove the front panel.
On my peticular model the drain pump had a very large circular tube with what looks like a twist off handle in the middle.
On mine, you rotate the handle counter-clockwise. It's very stiff at first. This is because of the thick rubber seal that you are rotating against.
After about one complete spin it should get very easy to spin and you unscrew it completely off, and pull straight out.
On mine, the back of the tube you pull out contains a tray that hold junk coming out of the wash.
The tray has holes for water to pass through to get to the pump.
When I took mine out, there was one quarter, and one nickel in the tray. That was all it took to clog the dain holes so the drain water moved too slow.
The on-board computer measures the water flow and can tell if it is moving too slow.
Keep in mind, sometimes the money in the tray must have vibrated off to the side just enough that the drain flow was fine.
My error code would be there one day, and not reappear for about two days. Then it would come back every day for about 3 or 4 days in a row.
It was very irratic to pin down when the code would appear, and when the wash would be fine.
I cleaned out the money and some very minor lint and re-assembled.
It's been 3 months and the code has not come back.

I repair these units. Maytag has a design flaw in their pumps but you can fix this yourself. Unplug the washer. You will have to undo the hoses, (2) 1/4" mount screws up underneath, (tilt the washer about 16") unplug the the connector. The rear part that is yellow will turn counter-clockwise about half inch and come off. Remove the impeller and water will pour out of the magnetic core housing. Blow dry it and put the "o" ring in place. Using RTV, seal the impeller housing and re-install. This may seem intimidating, but once you see how it comes apart, it's easy. This repair costs about 150.00 labor and a repairman will replace the pump at 160.00 to have the same thing happen later. Any questions, email me.

Tips for a great answer:
Oct 25, 2011 | Maytag EPIC MFW9700S Front Load Washer
code SD/5d means LONG DRAIN. This error appears when the drain time exceeds 8
minutes and the water valves turn off. After 4 minutes the "Sd" error
will be displayed, and then 4 minutes later the F21 error code will be
displayed. Press PAUSE/CANCEL two times to clear the display. Please Check the
drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked. If the drain hose if fine
then unplug the washer and check the electrical connections at the pump and
make sure the pump is running. Check the drain pump filter for foreign objects.
To access the drain pump and filter remove the front kick panel and trace the
drain hose to the bottom of the washer, drain pump would be located there. If
you are not able to access it, then replace the back panel as well. Plug in
washer or reconnect power. If the issue is still not resolved then you would
need to replace the drain pump. Hope this helps...please post
back for further assistance.

problem you have to take the bottom front panel apart and then clean the drain
filter pump assembly completely, make sure the washer is unplugged before
working on it. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.
