High pitch sound

When I turn on my Panasonic 42 in standard tv, I get no picture or sound just a high pitch sound. When I try to turn off the TV using the main power button it will not shut of the high pitch sound. I have to disconnect the plug from the wall outlet to make it stop. The only thing that I have done so far was blowing the dust out of the TV with canned compressed air.

You say the set still works, if that is the case then you have no shorts at all. most ikely you have coil in the horizontal stage vibrating producing the same noise as you describe. removing the coil and dipping it into some clear laquer usually solves this.
It is also possible that you have a couple of caps in the hot side of the power supply that are low capacitance making the coil run harder than what it should.

Yes, shorts cause this. I have a lightning damaged sample of this unit that presented with the same symptoms. The horizontal output transistor and the diode supplying it with B+ (D823) were shorted, as was sacrificial shunt zener D830 in another section of the supply. I don't know what voltage this part is, but is has to be <25 because this the rating of the capacitor connected to it. I know better than to just leave this part out and plug the thing in. Especially since, with the HO transistor out of the circuit, the B+ is over 240 volts, EXTREMELY high, so something else is probably wrong with the power supply. I am still waiting for service literature (back ordered for over a month). If anyone knows any more about this design, (like how it regulates and how to check this) please post the information. Thanks. I will probably replace the known bad parts and hope for the best, but hesitate because I don't want to damage more parts if I guess wrong on the zener voltage. (In this case, this is merely a part designed to short if voltage ever gets too high). There is a possibility that the high B+ is because the supply is running unloaded and cannot regulate. But since I haven't seen this unit before, I can't tell.

Someone sent me the schematic for this set. The problem was NOT lightning damage after all, but C820 (10MF/63V) which is the filter for the regulator reference voltage, gone bad. This took out D825, D830, and Q551. D825 is a general purpose fast switching 3A (similar to Thomson 164589) diode. D830 is an MA4270MTA, but you can use a 27V 1/2W zener, since this part does not conduct except in an overvoltage fault condition, then it merely shorts, as I stated in the last post. Q551 is the Horizontal Output, 2SC5339LBMA1, but this is not too critical. The B+ is NOT isolated from the power line so you measure it from the HOT ground.

That high pitched sound is the switch mode power supply yelling out to you, telling you there is a major short in the circuit somewhere. Most likly thre horizontal output transistor is shorted, and as the other tech said , maybe the flyback transformer is bad also. Bad capacitors in the main power supply can cause this sound once in a while. Good Luck Please do not forget to rate this thread.

I have a samsung neo 32 inch picture tube tv. When I turn it on there is no picture or sound, but there is a light high pitched noise.

That high pitched sound is likely the Horizontal Output section trying to work. It operates at 15,750 Hz or at the upper end of normal human ears.
It will sound like a high pitched whine.

This is a section or your television that you don't want to fool with unless you are quite familiar with servicing your set. There are very high voltages involved and only a qualified technician should tend to this defect. It maybe easy to fix or it may be quite involved. Get an estimate first then decide to go further or not. There is a potential fire hazard here so don't operate your set until this is resolved.

The high pitched sound is probably comming from the power supply, possibly due to its trying to drive voltage into a shorted component in the high voltage deflection circuits. You may be lookng at about a $250 repair. If it has been used a lot and its picture quality didn't knock your socks off, I would replace it with a HDTV set. A 37 inch LCD from Toshiba might be a good place to start and should do nicely for you.
