Hey I am back. If you give me the info that I requested in the last clarification, I may have your problem figured out soon.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Ok, I have a few minutes, so next question. What do you know about the hard drive. (brand, model, serial number, # of gigs, etc)

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Ok, I think we are on to something. Just a few more questions. Is the drive one that came from anoher computer or a new drive that you bought from the store?

p.s. I am a college student and I have to go to class now. I will get back to you in a few hours.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

If you click the main drive on the computer does it post space greater than the actual main drive that is in the computer?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

and the problem is that it won't show the drive in "My Computer," right?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

What system do you have (windows, mac, linux, etc), and what version (vista, xp, 98, etc)? Also, how computer litterate are you?

Ok, I think I have it now. That is an enclosure not an external hard drive. Make sure there is a hard drive in it. If you haven't tied to do anything internal with it, there is a huge chance that it doesn't even have a hard drive. If it doesn't, you have to get one (prefered that you get a new one). If it does have a drive, take it out and put it back in and see if it helps. If none of this helps, post another comment and we can try some other things. Hope this is a fixya!

The enclosure provides a secure and lightweight method of transporting and transferring large quantities of data at the fastest possible USB 3.0 speeds, while still being reverse compatible with USB 1.1/2.0. Your computer will quickly detect and configure the connected Hard Drive (Plug & Play) via the USB connection, with no need to restart the computer. Blazing USB 3.0 speeds of up to 5Gbps allow you to effortlessly run files directly from your hard drive, such as, songs, videos, and databases. The aluminum casing effectively dissipates heat, and its compact sleek design with mirror finish replaces the old eyesore hard drive enclosures of old. Page 2 Transfer interface USB 3.0 (Reverse compatible with USB 2.0/1.1) Transfer rate Up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.0); Up to 480Mbps (USB 2.0) Supported HDD 3.5" Work temperature -40~65 'C Work humidity 8%~90% Storage humidity 5%~95% Operating System Windows 2000/XP/VISTA/7; MAC OS X Page 3 System Requirements ? 3.5" SATA/SATA II (Serial ATA) hard drive ? Operating Systems: Windows 2000/XP/VISTA/7; MAC OS X Page 4 1. Open the retail package and remove the Hard Drive Enclosure. 2. Insert the SATA Hard Drive into the Case. 3. Tighten the screws to secure the Hard Drive to the base. 4. Slide the base into the outer enclosure, and secure it with the screws. 5. Connect the AC power adapter to the wall and the Enclosure. 6. Turn on the switch to ON. 7. Connect the USB cable to an available USB port on the computer. Page 5 At this point the Hard Drive is completely installed. No Software or Drivers are needed to complete the connection. The Hard Drive Enclosure should appear in Device Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine Manager under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass Storage" (There should be no error icon: '?' or '!') and the Hard Drive should appear in "MY COMPUTER" as a new Drive Letter. If the Hard-Drive is brand new you may need to first format it to make the Drive Letter appear. Right-click on MY COMPUTER, Select MANAGE, Go to DISK MANAGEMENT, go to the drive information in the Right column and Right-click on the drive to Initialize, Partition, Assign Drive Letter and Format. We recommend the NTFS file system. At this point you should get the Drive letter in MY COMPUTER.

Getting data off HDD from Caddy ?

I have had similiar issues using caddies there seems to be many connecting parts that can fail or become old and dirty failing to make contact with the hard drive you could remove the hard drive and check these contacts make sure they are clean and making contact

or

You could just remove the hard drive from the caddy and connect it directly inside your computer as a normal hard drive
or

You would have to remove the hard drive and use a usb sata ide kit

you will then have to connect it to your computer using a usb port

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=SATA+Power+Splitter&qpvt=SATA+Power+Splitter&FORM=IGRE

Once connected to another computer to a usb port and power supply you should get a message found new hardware and it should install the drivers it should show on your computer or you might have to install it manually

click start click on computer to open you should see this drive

If you dont.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a Yellow Question / Exclamation Mark? ! or a Red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers.

If you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver

Once you see this drive just click on it to open and copy all or any data you want and save it to another usb drive

or get one of these

The external drive does not show up on my desk top and it is plugged in.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

Hello everyone! I have a problem i have a Maxtor external HDD Before i could acces my data in there with no problems until now when i plug its USB on my laptop i hear the sound that it connected but...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have a iomega eGo HDD and its not showing up on my computer but it shows up under my devices how do I fix that

It depends. If this is the _very_ first time that you have connected the IOMEGA device to your computer, you'll need to "initialize" the HDD for usage by Windows (or Mac OS).
Or, if you've previously done that, and you've written files onto it, and now cannot read those files, you have an entirely-different problem, namely a "hardware" problem.

An external storage device has several major components:

* the USB cable (which in your case, seems OK, since the device is listed)
* the disk-drive inside the enclosure
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure
* optionally, an external power-supply that connects to the enclosure.

Use a multi-meter to measure the voltage/amperage generated by that power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the power-supply's label.

Disassemble the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing that USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

If the device is still under warranty, IOMEGA will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has terminated, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it inside the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

For that you need to uninstall all usb driver from device manager.
Right click on my computer icon then you see system property then go to hardware -> device manager then uninstall usb drivers 1 by 1 .
Then restart computer then all usb drivers are automatically installed.
Then connect your harddrive if still face same problem then connect your harddrive to another computer then check.
If another computer cant see your harddisk then your harddisk has hardware issue.
It need repairing .
If it is in warrenty take it to service shop they replaced it.
