B&D battery lawn mower - winter care

I am researching the winter care of the battery in a B&D CMM1200 lawn mower, on behalf of an elderly lady who has lost her manual. Will the battery survive a typical Ontario, Canada winter when stored unplugged in an unheated shed if fully charged before the season? Can or should it be left on charge throughout the winter in an unheated garden shed?

Lawn mower will not start and reading the manual we are unable to locate the fuses as per the trouble shooting guide to try this remedy first.Have already charged battery.

AGM batteries, commonly used by Black and Decker mowers, can be stored for long periods of time, especially at cooler temperatures. The cooler it is the slower the self-discharge rate. Please refer to the following web page for more charge/discharge/life information on AGMs.
Just make sure it is fully charged before winter storage, and consult the chart on that page for temperature-based charts.
Since it is slowly discharging over the winter, I typically will 'top it off' by running the charger for a 24 hour period once or twice during the winter. If you have a 'coldest week' or so during the winter, you could leave the charger plugged in during that week, the float charge will help keep it a bit warmer.
FYI I have a half dozen ~50Ah capacity AGMs with a 1998 date code that receive at most 1-2 such storage charges per year, and have retained most of their original capacity.
One other note is that for the typical Black and Decker charger I do not leave them on float continuously as this slowly damages the battery. One way to manage this easily is to use a programmable or rotary dial timer and set it for about 50% longer than the typical bulk charge time for your mower, which will give it ample float time, but not excessive amounts.

Hi, it depends on the age of the battery. if it's new no ploblem depending on the age you may have to give it a trickle charge in jan.

If this doesn’t work for you please write back. Thanks,

Battery may not hold a charge. Even if a battery shows it's charged on the charger you may have a faulty battery. This is a common happening.

Short battery charge

The B & D MM575 mower is not battery operated nor is it cordless. CMM1200 CMM1936 CMM1836 are the currently available cordless mowers. You can buy a battery from B &D, they list it here:

Replacement batterys for cmm1200 black&decker electric mower I have a Stealth Black & Decker rechargable mower and would like to know what battery I need and can I replace it myself Thanks Cherie

I discuss the solution to your problem in my review. I am using a replacement AGM Lead Acid battery that increased my mowing distance and does not take more power to charge because the battery has an lower internal resistance. The battery is a Power Sonic, PSH-12180FR, 21Amp Hour unit. You will need to order two of them.

We should all do our part to save the enviroment and encourage the growth of the solar and wind power industries.

Cordless electric lawn mowers go a long ways towards these goals. I recently purchased the Black & Decker Cordless Electric Lawnmower the CMM1200.

In the review I describe how to upgrade the mower to mow over 9,000 SQFT!

I hope my review will help you make a decision about our future.
