How does this work on a deck that doesn't have a volume up / down key (it has a rotary knob instead). Is there a different process?

YOU MUST HAVE THE REMOTE to do the procedure. There is no other way to clear the code. I work at an authorized Kenwood service center and I know this for a fact. If you do not have a remote, you will need to either buy one or borrow one from a friend, or take the radio to an authorized Kenwood service center and they can do it for you, but most charge a small fee for doing it. My shop charges $25 to clear a code, all shops have their own rates so a shop near you may be different. Most all Kenwood remotes made for car radios will work, it doesn't need to be a remote from the same model, just a Kenwood remote for a car stereo.

Here is the procedure

1. While the code entry is requested, press and hold the
VOL UP key on the faceplate for 3 seconds while holding the DISP key
pressed on the faceplate. (This should turn "----" off.)
2. Enter "KCAR" from the remote. (Same way as the 01
model)
• Press the 5 key on the remote twice, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "K".)
• Press the 2 key on the remote 3 times, then press
the Track Up key. (This enters "C".)
• Press the 2 key on the remote once, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "A".)
• Press the 7 key on the remote twice, then press the
Track Up key. (This enters "R".)
3. The security code is cleared and the unit enters the
ALL OFF mode.
4. If you commit a mistake in the code entry, the unit
enters the code request mode again.

It would be appreciated if you would rate this solution, since this is the only way to clear the code, it is deserving of a FixYa! rating. If you need any further help feel free to post any questions you have right here on this thread and I will answer them as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Dave

How do u reset the stero without remote control kenwood kdc mp628

if the face of radio comes off. there should be a rese.t if it does, behind the face of stereo. if its a original car radio. try by unhooking power to the stereo, to see if this resets it or remove radio fuse for a few minutes.. leave unhooked for about 3 or 4 minutes.

Need to get the security code for Kenwood KDC-608OR

ok I just found this info online and they say it came from the service manual for that stereo so I hope it helps:

You will need a Kenwood RC-410 remote control. This remote works on KDC-519, KDC-X859, KDC-319, KDC-4019, KDC-MP919, KDC-X759, KDC-419, KDC-X459, KDC-MPV619, KDC-MPV7019, KDC-2022, KDC-2022V, KRC-435, KRC-535 and KDC-X959

To reset the code do the following:

1) Turn on the car.
2) The faceplate rotates out and the CODE - - - - prompt appears.
3) Press >>' and Auto keys simultaneously on the faceplate and hold for 4 seconds. (If the faceplate rotates back into the console push on the upper left top edge of the faceplate and it will flip back around. Press the Eject button and then try it again.)
4) The screen will still say CODE, but the - - - - will disappear! When this happens press the 5 key on the remote twice and it enters a K on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
5) Press the 2 key on the remote three times and it enters a C on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
6) Press the 2 key on the remote once and it enters an A on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
7) Press the 7 key on the remote twice and it enters an R on the display on the faceplate. Hit the >>' key on the faceplate.
8) The radio goes into All Off mode and you are set! Hit the SRC button on the faceplate to select CD, Radio, etc.

Need to reset the code on my Kenwood deck.

you should try the defaults 0000,0123,1234. in most cases unless you or the original owner put in the security code. Worse case it will just keep turning off till you get it right.
