Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Reverse doesn't work

Machine will sew as well as ever but the reverse button fails to put the machine into reverse stitching any longer. Opening the side up and pushing the button shows very limited movement. Do we hold funeral services? Machine is 15 years old and I've had it since it was new.

Remove the base cover and follow the lever you mentioned that has "little movement" to a collar around the shaft......or similar if not Janome.........use WD40 or similar penetrating lube between the shaft/collar, and move by hand rapidly a few times to introduce the lube between sticking points.
Use paper tissue around the area to absorb overspray and excess.

Try the reverse lever again,,,,sometimes it can take several applications and some persistance, but I've only had a few that failed to respond.....some take several days and quite a bit of 'jiggling'. A good first sign is a long, slow, reluctant movement soon after spraying.
Best long term solution is regular use and keep dry and free of dust and lint......old oil and dust form a glue like fluid, and any slight corrosion left too long will seize the parts, where regular use breaks the bonding. Silica Gel dessicant (sachets found in Vitamin Jars) is a good moisture deterrent if you keep it in the case/cover with machine,,,,,,,,,,if you don't have a cover, make one !! ( or use an old  teatowel)
If you mention your make and model it generally makes it easier to be specific, with this question, you are posting generic, but mechanisms vary from manufacturer and model.
Best of....

Where is reverse button

Depends on the make & model of your machine. Would be best to consult the owner's manual. Mechanical and computerized machines also vary. Mechanical machines usually have a stitch length lever that, when pushed all the way up, will reverse stitch, or there is a button usually marked with an R or an arrow. Computerized machines usually have a button marked by a U-shaped arrow.

Of course, if you have a vintage sewing machine, it may not even have a reverse stitch. Instead, to sew in reverse, one would have to sink the needle into the fabric, raise the presser foot and swivel the fabric 180 degrees, drop the presser foot and stitch.

To find a copy of the owner's manual, search the internet for:
Manufacturer + Model + the word "Manual"

There doesn't seem to be a stitch long enough on machine for basteing so I can gather material?

Try loosening both top and bottom tension. while longer stitches are easier, it can be done on shorter stitches as well. A bennifit to shorter stitches is the gathers will be smaller and easier to work with! Remember to reset the bobbin tension before sewing again.

I just got an old Sears Kenmore Sewing machine model 385.17781. Everything is working fine except the reverse stitch. When the reverse button is pressed, the fabric doesn't move or sometimes movin

it sounds like the feed dogs & the reverse button need to be
checked at a repair shop,
to see why they are not responding to each other.

My sewing machine is sewing backwards how to put it properly?

You've most likely accidentally hit the "reverse" stitch button, which sews in the opposite direction. The button will be marked by one of these symbols: grtartst_1.jpg

This symbol indicates the reverse stitch button. Just press this button and your machine should start sewing in the right direction!

I have an old sewing machine in my attic, i just recently put it to use. but i cant seem to find the reverse stitch button. im only 14, it was my moms sewing machine. but shes no longer with us, so im...

I've got a Kenmore sewing machine and the back stitch is a button/lever on the front of the machine. It has to be held down when you want to back stitch, because when you let it go it stitches forward again. Hopefully that helps, I'm not sure what yours looks like. ( I couldn't find pictures of your model online anywhere.) :)

Viking sewing machine model 6430 will only sew backwards

Th cam stack gears have gummed up on you you can try getting the back cover off along with the side and soaking the machine down with wd-40 and running it while forcing the reverse button in and out if it breaks free try and soak up as much of the wd-40 as you can and then oil anything that moves. I know this may be discouraging but viking no longer supports this machine and you might be better off taking it to an older viking dealer for help.

In the center of the stitch length knob (at the right side of the machine) is a button. You would push that button in to get the machine to reverse.

Machine sews only in reverse

Be sure you are in the correct stitch pattern...if you are on a buttonhole stitch or a stretch stitch it normal for the machine to sew backwards. Be sure your length is to the right of 0 and not in a strtch stitch model or buttonhole mode.
