Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer

Whirlpool front loader problem

Bill, your diagonoisis seems to be right on. I think it is the stainless steal basket. A couple of questions for you.
1. how did you get whirlpool to send the basket??? did you have to have someone come out and authorize it or did you send them pictures????
2. How hard was it to put in and how long did it take you? 3. Did you need any special tools to pull the basket off??? every repair guy says it's a big job... about $500 to do it for the labor, I'm willing to do it myself if it's possible. I just don't want to get in over my head. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

1. The stainless-steel basket is warranteed for life. Parts only, not labor to repair.
Whirlpool warranty service took my word about the basket being defective, and agreed to supply me with a new one. No pictures were required to convince them of the problem, I asked them if they wanted to see a picture of the problem, but they said that it was not necessary. I did mention to them that I had been to my local dealer where I learned that the shaft support bracket was not available as a separate part (good for us, bad for Whirlpool as I don't believe they intended to warranty the shaft support bracket for "life"). As I mentioned in my prior post, I had to purchase a new tub front half, but at least they agreed to sell it to me at 50% off (but I'm sure it was still more than the mfg cost).

2. To replace the basket you basically have to take the entire machine apart. If you have at least basic mechanical skills you will be ok. The repair manual is helpful in finding out how to take things apart (like how to disconnect the door gasket and such). Took me about 4 hours to take it apart, working slowly and diligently. Assembly time was a bit less because I already knew how things were to go back together.

I can believe the $500 labor quote you received, it is basically an all-day job (8hrs). So if you're not going to do the job yourself, it's probably more cost effective to purchase another washer.

Based on the galvanic corrosion of the shaft support bracket ("spider"), I decided not to connect the ground wire that is attached to the bearing housing (I believe it is there for electrical safety in case for some reason the basket gets electrified somehow). This should cut down, or eliminate, the current path that enables the galvanic corrosion. Basically the die cast aluminum support bracket ends up being the sacrificial anode in the system.

Regards, and good luck,
Bill

Overfilling loads can cause small objects like pins, coins, and small socks to get between the tub abd Basket of your washer.

The basket is held onto the rear half of the outer tub simply by the bolt to the main pulley.
Remove the bolt, remove the pulley, and the basket shaft should slip right out of the bearings of
the rear tub.

Simply shining a light around between the basket and outer tub should confirm that there is something in there, since you have access to do this with
the front tub removed. Go ahead, remove the pulley and bolt, and if
the basket comes out, then check everything out.

If it doesn't, don't try pounding it out; stop there and go to plan B, which is a new basket
and tub assembly.

Whirlpool Duet Washer (GWH9100LW1) Bangs Loudly during spin

how old iss your washer? do you have an owners manual. because usually there is an extended factory warrenty on the tub and basket. the only thing you would have to pay for would be the labor. Call whirlpool if you do not have a owners manual to find out. the bearing is compressed in the tub. does it sound like an airplain taking off in your house that's usually it.

Whirlpool won't spin at high speed

Sounds like you may have lost your basket drive and clutch assembly. This is a pretty involved job to replace for sure, and requires you to remove the inner basket, drop the transmission, etc. Does the unit make any wierd noises, like popping or grinding? Does it agitate ok in wash? I would bet almost for sure that its that basket drive and attached sub-pack thats went bad. If you want to try and tackle this yourself, let me know, and will get you directions to do so. Good Luck!!!!

one of the welds on your inner stainless steal tub may have broke causing the drop of your tub.  The tub has a warranty on it but the labor to put it in is around 3hrs give or take any hour.
