Question about Olympus SP-550 UZ Digital Camera

1 Answer

SP550UZ photos show vertical purple streaks if bright reflection

When the shot contains a reflection off a shiny surface, or a bright light source, the photo shows bright purple streaks vertically. I don't see anything on the lens, have cleaned it well. Otherwise good camera, but do all SP550UZ do this? I saw same artifact on a YouTube movie shot with this kind of camera. Is there any solution? Would a polaroid filter stop it?

How can I photograph shiny stainless steel objects, without getting a reflection on the surface?

You will need a light source that does not reflect. Typically, you can move the lights so the reflections don't show, or use a very large lit surface so the reflection is softened.

Since polished subjects do reflect, you may find that you need some reflections just to show that the object is shiny.... Without that, it won't look right.

Nikon coolpix s710 pictures have a streak

I think your picture has a bright light source in the frame. In digital cameras this phenomenon is common that in some angle these streaks of lines are produced with very bright light sources. be careful not to include bright light source while taking pics. But if u have these streaks and line in all the frames, then better check your camera with the service centre.

The vertical line can be caused by a very bright object in the image like a lamp or a silver surface reflecting the flash.
The spots are caused by the flash being SO close to the lens. Any object that can reflect the flash reflects it right back at the camera. This is an image problem with most point and shoot digitals. Watch for reflective surfaces and stand at an angle to them. Turn on more lights in the room before using flash. Stand at a slight angle to the image or person you are photographing - don't shoot straight on. (I kneel down and shoot up - makes a good shot too.)
If you are shooting toward the sun, shield the lens from direct sunlight with your hand (Keep your hand out of the picture!)

Flaw on LCD monitor

This is normal. It may be distracting, but what it is is light. If you notice, it happens when there are bright spots, lights, reflections. These distortions will show up in video so try to avoid aiming at bright things while in video mode. Another type of flicker will happen mostly in florescent light.

Before CCD image sensors, video camera used tubes and aiming them at the sun or bright objects would burn the tubes permanently so cameras have come a long way, but by the nature of cameras being devices that record light, it is hard to eliminate that effect altogether (similar to red eye...just can't be a perfect science due to human nature of having blood vessels in the back of their eyes that when bright light is shined into them, their pupils open and the red color is reflected and shows up as red eye...this is best fixed in a photo editing program. It is hard to totally prevent, but changing angles and not shooting directly head on at subject helps). But I digress...

If it is really distracting for you, here is the one thing I found helpful; recompose the shot slightly by moving yourself, the camera, the angle (doesn't have to be dramatically different, but try to have the sun or light source behind the camera). As you move around, continue to push the shutter halfway down (each time not continuously) to bring subject into focus (getting your green box or boxes that indicate proper focus). Sometimes the lines will disappear if you change your shot even very slightly.

Hope this Helps!

A horizontal or vertical red line appears on picture.

Red lines are caused by glare. Avoid photographing shiny surfaces that reflect excessive amounts of light into your lens.

Vertical lines and purple artifacts when the camera is aimed at bright subjects

Current LCD display technology can reproduce about 300 different levels of brightness. Brightly lit scenes or light sources may exceed this brightness range, causing a temporary disruption (artifacts) in the live display. Artifacts are part of the display, but they are not part of your recorded image. If you take a picture while you see artifacts on the screen and then display the picture on the LCD, you will no longer see the artifacts.
