No power to microwave, Whirlpool MH3185

My husband was changing the bulb under the microwave. It was stuck, and at one point there was a spark. Now we have no power to the microwave. Outlet is good. Is there some kind of reset button somewhere in the microwave? It is a Whirlpool over the stove kind, MH3185XPB. I really hope he didnt fry it!

I do not know where the fuse is on the microwave. The circuit breaker on the house is fine. The outlet that we plug the microwave in works fine.

  • amyteller Nov 19, 2008

I would like to try and change the fuse ourselves. If someone could just tell me where to find it!

We are in the process of trying to get a manual online, but if you could just tell me where to find the fuse, it would help!

Hi

Fuse/circuit breaker Check to see if power is getting to the range/oven. Does anything turn on--even a light? If not, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

Main wiring Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the range/oven, gets burned and so breaks the connection. Then you may have to replace the power cord to the range/oven, and the terminal block that the wire is attached to.

Range/oven wiring There may be a broken or burned wire at the back of the range/oven. If you repair any of the wires, use only proper appliance-grade wire and wire connectors.

Thank you

Hi,

Design wise, there would only be two locations for the fuse:

  • at the rear near the rubber grommet where the AC cord comes out inside a fuse holder; or
  • internally on the PCB (printed circuit board) right at the back of the LCD display/timer/button panel.
Just a thought, this would be the same fuse that powers the onboard electronics (not the heavy electrical) and therefore the unit would appear dead.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

  1. No power to outlet (blown fuse or tripped breaker or GFCI).
  2. Blown main fuse - likely due to other problems.
  3. Open thermal protector or thermal fuse.
  4. Defective controller or its power supply.
  5. Clock needs to be set before other functions will operate (some models)

  1. Cabinet screws replaced in incorrect location (safety interlock not engaged).
  2. Any number of screwups.
  1. Defective triac (doesn't turn off properly).
  2. Defective relay.
  3. Shorting wires.

: Oven heats on high setting regardless of power setting.

  1. Faulty primary relay or triac or HV relay (not commonly used).
  2. Faulty controller.

The fuse can be found just about where the AC power cord enters the microwave.
Click here to see how the fuse looks like and can be seen easily. The ratings should be 15 amps 250 volts, maybe you can try radioshack to see if they have them.

Possibly the fuse is blown, its most likely a thermal fuse and you would need a professional to check out the microwave and replace it if everything is OK.

At this point from a practical and safety point of view best to have a shop look at this and see if it can be fixed for a reasonable price.

Changed light bulbs and now they won't go off when you hit the button

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

The lights can can be inoperable or stuck on or stuck in "night light" mode. Sometimes this will similarly affect the fan operation or inside light, too.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

From what others have said, it will come out, but you have to use some strong good needle nose pliers to turn the base in the socket.

Microwave went completely dead after changing bulb-

Nom...you probably blew the internal fuse. This time...turn off the power. Remove the button panel and search for the blown fuse. It might be ceramic or of some other type. If on a circuit board, there will be a xxxA with xxx indicating the amperage. Use a multitester available at Ace or Radio Shack to test. Replace with the same kind of unit. Your local auto store, appliance parts guy, Radio Shack or Sears parts can get you the part you need. Show them the old one.
