Question about AppleWorks 6 for mac

Half of the page disappears

When I use AppleWorks, I'll be in the middle of the document, and the top of the page goes blank. If I scroll down, more and more of the text disappears. Why is this? What can I do to stop it?

When you say the text disappears, do you mean it disappears from the display, or it is physically removed from the document?

Does the text disappear when you are doing nothing, or when you are taking some sort of action?

If you take a screen shot of the screen after the text "disappears," does that screen shot show the missing text or not?

What OS and model of machine are you running?

This sounds like a graphics issue rather than content actually disappearing. AppleWorks is an outmoded piece of software now and this issue may be related to an incompatibility with the computer you are using it in.

Which Mac do you have and what operating system does it use?

You can find the operating system number by clicking on the apple in the top left in the menu bar on the screen and choosing About this Mac

Hi, Sorry to hear your having problems,
Well, if you save and quit then re-open the document, is the text back ? Or is it Gone Gone Gone.....
I suspect that the text is there.....
Which means it is a simple redraw problem. A redraw problem on a Mac happens when the processor on the Mac is overloaded and is no longer able to provide the necessary processing power to display the necessary elements fast enough. Also, if you have a machine with shared Ram as Video Ram, this could be a very common problem...
So, what Mac Model do you have, Speed, Ram and Disk size and available space.
If this is the case, it's not a major problem, you just have to make sure you don't run too many apps at the same time, like no other application running when you are in AppleWorks.

It sounds like a render issue. AppleWorks is ancient. Export your data as text delimited and import into Excel, or better, Filemaker - both of which are currently supported. AppleWorks is not.

SOURCE: typing lag

I dont normally work much with mac's, but are you able to type fine in office- word for example? Is the computer slow normally, even without running programs? What it could is that you have to much stuff on your computer taking up space. Try to put all your photos on dics or on an external hard-drive and then get rid of them off yr computer, also get rid of any music files that you may have stored- have them on CD's as well. This should fix the problem, but if not, uninstall any unessesary programs. Hope this can help... be interseted if it does... get back to me if you can!

I am working on a Mac 10.5.8 imac computer. I have used appleworks forever and dont want to let it go. EVERY time I start Appleworks 6 from the doc it crashes. I can open AW from another document but...

Appleworks is now a discontinued product and has been replaced by iWork. Its best if you start to learn how to use iWork instead since applework documents will have very limited compatibility.

I can't open a disk that contains all of my old appleworks documents using Mac OSX10.5

Appleworks support stopped at 10.4. Best thing I can tell you is to try NeoOffice or iWork.

How do I open an Appleworks Draw (.cwk) in Mac OS X 10.5.6

AppleWorks was a great program. I miss some of it's features. But there isn't anything that is going to open them up to edit them, other than appleworks. You need to convert them into something else that will work for you. I agree with the other solution that putting them into a PDF format would work. You could then open them with Adobe Illustrator, and convert them to that format.
I have heard that EazyDraw can open them, but I have not worked with it.
I know this may be a stale question, but I can offer my services to convert these files for you: jbarnhart@minespress.com

I have a msg error code Quarkxpress 7

Sorry I only just saw your posst so this may be far too late, but at least for future reference: -36 is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous errors in the Mac world.

It's name is "ioErr" and the rather obtuse explanation for it is "I/O error (bummers)" ie, there was some kind of input/output error.

This should mean that XPress is trying to work with a corrupt file.

The most likely suspects, in rough order, are a text or picture file that XPress just tried to import; an auxiliary file such as a font, profile or XPress Xtension; a text or picture file already imported; the XPress document you are working with; your XPress Preferences file; XPress itself.

Working with XPress since version 2 on Apple system 6 I have never seen any guaranteed cure for a -36 error but there are three basic remedies, none of which is by any means certain.

Any corrupt file just might be revived by Copying it to another location.

If the file seems to be an XPress document and can be Opened at all, there is a better chance of reviving it by first making a new, blank XPress document containing nothing more than the one obligatory blank pagewith the same page size as the suspect had. Saving, Closing and re-Opening the blank document alongside the suspect, setting both documents to Thumbnails view then manually Dragging each page from the suspect into the blank will essentially cause XPress to look at what it's doing, rather than assuming that all the components are workable. Fairly obviously, it may be safer to Drag one page at a time Saving, Closing and re-Opening the "rescue" file between Drags.

Again if the file seems to be an XPress document and can be Opened at all, there is a better chance of reviving it by working with a Copy, deleting either half of its contents - whether whole pages or items on a single page - Saving the remainder, Closing re-Opening, testing and perhaps again deleting half the contents…

Good luck

Error -37

Hi, sorry you are having problems,
Well, here is what error -37 is: Code: error -37 bdNamErr Description: Bad file name (File System Error)
Basically, it is saying you cannot save a file by that name in that place....
Did you try saving it elsewhere on your Mac, like on the desktop ?
Just a side note, Apple stopped development on AppleWorks some time ago ( 3 years ) in favour of iWork. I highly recommend getting the newest version of iWork 09, it's compatible with all your Works documents and is really built for MacOS X 10.5, Leopard.
What do you mean whe you say “ Before I reimaged the machine ..” ?

Mail Merge won't print

AppleWorks is a quirky and hopelessly outdated product. I am aware that a few people have an extreme fondness for it however.
It should only have taken minutes to import data, but don't do it in AppleWorks - they stopped making it years ago and it is unsupported and non-standard.
I have just taken two AppleWorks databases, - one older and one newer that needed to be combined. I exported them as tab delimited text and then imported them into Excel (You could use Apple Numbers - the modern equivalent to AppleWorks). Because the to db's had different headers, I imported them into two different Excel docs first and moved the columns around so the matched first, them copy each column over to the 'master' excel sheet.
You can either use the basic database tools in Excel, or once your data is combined and in this kind of data form, it is easy to import a .xls, or .csv into a new database program, such as Filemaker.
If you do copy over the data to Excel, any merge function - for label printing etc. has to be done in Word (or at least up to Word 2004). I was thrown by this until I realised you have to do this. Once a merge doc is set up with the right labels, it worked beautifully. Typical MS though it is a wholly unintuitive process.
Copy and importing data should be done with attention to care obviously. Make sure you have your original AW files backed up before you start.
