the internet connection light keeps going off to red every day just in the middle of important emails - the router was provided by aol as a replacement to one by netgear which I had for years- is the problem with aol or the router?

Perhaps you're misreading the model number? There is a DSL-2640B on their site. Here's a link to the information:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=567

If it really is an "R" at the end, it might be a specialized version for a particular service provider. But the basic information should be the same.

I just looked more closely at some of the Google links that came up when I looked for DSL-2640R. They are all from UK sites, including an announcement from D-Link themselves which references that model. I'm thinking now that it might be a European or UK version.

I want to access my broadband with a amazon kindle, but i cant find my password. my router is dsl-2640r

do you mean your password for logging into the router itself or the key to access the wireless network? both can be reset by finding the tiny reset button somewhere on the router itself, you'll need a small pin to press it. This will however wipe out all settings on the router, and it will have to be configured again.
If the password you're looking for is to log into the router in order to configure it, when you reset the router, that password will be restored to its factory default, every router is different, but they all have the default user name and password listed in the manual that came with the router, if you no longer have the manual you can download a copy of it from the d-link website.
hope that helps, get back to me with more info if it doesn't and i can walk you through it.

Router supplied by AOL - DSL-2640R Firmware version V1.18 The router drops the Internet connection constantly.

Your router has small NAT table and it's easy to overflow, especially if P2P like torrent used. The only solution to prevent router to drop out connections is reset it periodically or install Router Comamander software (freeware version available). Router Commander prevents router from dropping connections using dynamic NAT table size control.
