Question about Samsung HL-S5088W 50" HDTV

3 Answers

Right side 7-8'' of screen is obscured. like a thin grey curtain.

You can see through to the action which seems to be projected normally. the leading edge is soft and from top to bottom is not even and is slightly out of vertical.
I looked through the inspection holes and the mirror is firmly in place and not damaged and no debris is in the projection pathway or over the lens.
the set is 2+ years old and the problem has been steady for several months.
I replaced the lamp which fixed the problem of the set turning itself off at random times, but had no effect on the screen problem.

I have good news for you. This is a common issue with some of the Samsung DLP TV's. The light tunnel assembly has 4 little mirrors in it and one side is collapsing. These parts are available but, will required to be replaced by a technician as some light engine dissasembly and reassembly is needed. This should cost around $250 dollars or less. Repairing the TV is far cheaper than replacement. Don't let anyone else fool you as the light engine doesn't need to be replaced for this situation.

I have bad news for you. This sounds like the light engine is bad. This is a very expensive part to replace. In most cases it would be cheeper to buy a new tv.

LCD Philips 26pf8946 after about 45mins right hand 1/3rd picture not viewable

Hi Darnez,
It sound like to me that one of the boards that power the bad side of the screen is getting hot and quitting. The boards are not too expensive to replace but getting them is generally the big problem. ( At least for our company). The set would be worth tkaing to a local shop and have it looked at, but replacement costs are going down every day it seems.
Good Luck
I hope in some way this has helped

I followed GuestUser/ Slinteriors advice and I fixed it. Open the front of the TV and there are 6 little nobs in the front. The botton 3 are what you need to adjust. from left to right the color controls are BLUE, RED GREEN. For the blue lines, slightly (I really mean very slightly) turn the botton left nob clockwise (right).
