Hi Katie.. If you are using a coaxial cable to connect your TV and VCR, the TV needs to be tuned to channel 3 or 4. If you are using the Yellow, red and white cables, your TV should be on video mode to work.
U tries using another set of RCA component cable set,the RCA component cable set u are using might have damages frail wires and dead connections on the audio sides the R,W wires.Tries clean out and make sure u have good contact connections on to the tv Audio input connections holes by using the connections of the RCA component cable by pluging it in and take it out must have do this a couple times, because sometimes old electronic equipments require to do that for to insure u have a good contact between connections of the devices.
Get an antenna hooked up, even rabbit ears should pull in a few analog channels. Set top boxes will only output Ch 3 (switcheable to ch 4 on the back if needed) and cable may be dead or only give you scrambled CATV channels. You need to set your tuner to "antenna", not CATV, IRC,HRC, or ATSC (if you have a digital tuner) and do the setup again. You could have a bad tuner at worst, and all is not lost, just hook up a VCR via RCA cables and use the VCR tuner to change channels. Keep TV on Ch3.
you have a bad tuner you can replace it or use vcr if you still have one around. hook it up with av cable like your ps2 and hook your cable to it and use it to change channels. If you want to replace the tuner it will require soldering and you will have to order it somewhere. i would try partsore.com. The tuner is the metal can the cable goes into inside the tv.
your problem is intermittent but from your complain it seems that your IF video circuit which is vry technical have your set checked by a technician.to resolve your problem the job will cost about $90.00
