Question about Umax PowerLook III Prepress Flatbed Scanner

1 Answer

Won't complete initialization/calibration

When I power on my scanner I get the interior light, flashing ready/option lights and a single buzz, but it doesn't continue it's power cycle. Sometimes the indicator light will stop flashing and my software will recognize the scanner as ready, but if I try to scan the calibration progress window comes, the scanner makes a continuous clicking sound, but nothing and the software times out. The scanner worked 1-2 months ago. It gets infrequent use. It was cold in the house the day this problem came up, but since then it still won't work in the warm. We tried the power cycling, removing it form scsi and taking it to a new single outlet to try to power it on. No go. We opened it to see if we could see something making it stick/lock or any visible burnt/discolored electronics. Nothing immediately apparent. We didn't disassemble though. I downloaded a driver update and installed it, but as expected, this accomplished nothing. My husband thinks it may be a relay but we have no schematic or repair manual. The problem seems mechanical. Please help. I'm a freelance graphic designer with no budget (barely starting up in freelancing). This scanner hasn't been used a lot. The problem may well be caused by lack of use, for all I know. The transparency adapter has never been used. I should get more mileage out of this unit even though it's about 5-6 years old. I can't afford to replace it with another professional model and the idea of a cheap consumer model is very depressing. Business is still VERY slow where I am (Katrina affected area) and I don't know when I could afford an equipment upgrade. Thanks, inez

Re: won't complete initialization/calibration

Hi...I  have a PowerLook III, and that sounds like the super frustrating problem I used to have...first of all, don't worry about it not being used for awhile...I didn't use mine for 10 years and now it's great...except my Trans adapter problem. Anyway...I am running Mac OSX.4.11...I got a Ratoc SCSI to Firewire adapter from the Lasersoft people..they make the Silverfast scanninng software...and my scanner works more creepy SCSI bus and driver and card issues...I highly recommed one...I hope this helps! Sometimes when it is scanning the light moves really slow. It is almost like it is moving back and forth. It does this on small items and large items I am scanning. but not all the time

You might have to calibrate the scanner from time to time. The software included should have some type of calibration options. Without calibration, the scanner's "scanning capabilities" deteriorate over time.

3 lights were flashing, now no lights flashing & not on

it is always handy to state the brand and the type of connection when referring a fault.
if its USB the check in ctrl panel DEVICE MANAGER if there is a yellow exclamation mark.
same for serial ...against the scanner

if this exclamation is there it means that it does not recognise the scanner and will need to be reinstalled.
check that the serial plug is on firmly, both at scanner and computer, dont just look... undo and reseat on both. Ensure the POWER plug is connected firmly and that it IS switched on.. try something else in that plug and see if it works.

simple things are often overlooked and users thinking technicians are just stupid to ask these questions, but 9/10 it is the simple thing that causes the problem.

Is there a calibration option for Canon Canoscan Lide 70?

Im not sure if this specific scanner has one But what it would do is calibrate the lights in the scanner to pick up colors better and it would calibrate the position of the scanning bar.

Xerox Documate 252, just quit working

The flashing green light has the following meaning:

• Blinking green: indicates the scanner is waking up from power
saving and preparing to scan.
• Steady green: indicates the scanner is ready to scan.

How to Adjust the Power Save Settings for the DocuMate 252
1. Right-click on the One Touch icon and choose Show
Hardware from the pop-up menu.
You can also click the scanner icon at the top of the One Touch
Button Panel.
If the Hardware View of the panel is open you can also right-
click on the DM252 icon.
The Hardware Properties dialog box opens and shows
information about your Xerox DocuMate 252 scanner.
2. Click the Properties button.
Your scanner has a built-in power saving feature that is set to
power down after 15 minutes of idle time. You can change the
time before the scanner powers down, from 1 minute to a
maximum of 3 hours.
3. Click the arrows for the Lamp timeout setting and choose a
time setting.
To return the scanner to its factory settings, click Reset Device.
4. Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog box.

Let me know if this solves the problem and thank you, Binary Bob

I280 won't scan!

ImageCalibration means the cameras don't get enough light during their self test.
Please check the following points:
Are both lamps on or one lamp in case you have a single page scanner?
Are the imaging guides (the clear sheets above the cameras) clean?
Are the little white tags on the imaging guides present?
One tag on each imaging guide.
Without this small white tags the cameras are not able to check themself.
For emergency you can apply a small white paper or white insulating tape instead of missing tags to test the scanner.

If the lamps are light, both tags are present please calibrate the scanner with the kodak calibration sheets. You will find the calibration menue in the scanner validation tool. You can get this tool from the Kodak home page.

Ready/Error Light

IT have just been down to look at our scanner & cleaned the sensor which is in between the rollers just where the paper flits out at the bottom - we now have a green light! So look for that sensor.

The UMAX web site appears to have a fairly good knowledge base, especially when it comes to troubleshooting blinking lights. Doing a search for lights under Support info result a few articles, including this one:
