Technically, you could take the wires off the motor and check to see if you have 120 volts which elimenates any other componet. The fact that you can spin the motor and it runs some what indicates that you do have the voltage there and that the bearings in the motor are going bad and causingthe motor to stop. Repalce the motor,

SOURCE: Is the condenser fan supposed to run continually?

To answer your first question no it is not suppose to run all the time. There is a relay that control the motor that is bad and you will need to replace it. The reason you can bump it and it works is because you are shacking loose the items inside the relay

SOURCE: My 1998 GE refrigerator condenser fan keeps

Hello,

A common question on on our site is about different fan sound that happen and the causes. These noises are often fairly easy to fix and some are the result of other problems.

If you are hearing a rattling sound or a squeaking, high pitched squeal coming from the bottom or back or the refrigerator then the condenser fan motor is probably going bad. Sometimes the bearing in the fan motor will even get so bad that the fan blade will start to hit anything that is close to it down there. This can create a very loud noise. This fan normally will be running when ever the compressor is running also.

As with any other problems you will want to get these things fixed promptly. If the problem is just a squeal a bit of light motor oil will do wonderful things for you. Many times though, you will have to order the parts needed to fix the problem. When repairing the problem make sure to remove all power the the unit and to wear gloves is possible, as there are many sharp edges in close quarters that will butcher you hands in no time.

The other fan that can cause sound is the evaporator fan. While this fan too can get worn and become noisy, it also can sometimes start to hit ice that is building up because of a problem with the defrost system of the refrigerator. Checkout my tips about defrost problems if you find a build up of ice and the fan is hitting the ice and making noise. This fan can also be oiled if needed, and it will also wear out and need to be replace occasionally. This fan usually will go off when the door is opened, so sometimes it makes it difficult to figure out exactly what is happening. By holding the door switch in manually, you can get the fan to run and troubleshoot it more easily. Make sure to remove all power before trying to service the fan. Spinning fan blades do not play nice with your hands!

For many refrigerators you will have to remove some covers or even the whole bottom of the freezer to get to this fan for replacement. Checking the exploded views at appliance parts websites can give you an idea of where the fan is located and what must be removed to get to it for replacement.

Both of these fans and the associated parts are available for most refrigerators online. Look for them at the appropriate spots in the exploded views of the units.

Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

If the motor is running, but running slowly, you will need to replace the motor. If there was a problem with the PCB, (control board) the motor would not run at all and you would see other problems with the refrigerator.
Here is a link to the motor.

Hi Brandy,

As for your fans, the fans in the back of the unit, (bottom back of the unit, not inside) is called a condenser fan motor this only cools the compressor for the fridge. This fan only runs when the compressor is running. The other fan is in the freezer section and is a variable speed fans motor, this can do two different things with only one job. The fan itself can ramp up and down in speed to control air flow and temperature demand in the two sections. This can run a lot but should slow down when temperature is met or while in a defrost mode. So to sum up this answer, it is common to hear fans run in the newer unit over the older units. Believe it or not do save energy with just moving air over running the compressor all the time.

I hope this helps.

Why would evap fan running slow

If u turn the fan by hand and it turn then u need a new fan, and i think u are mixing up the fans, the fan inside the refrigerator would be the evaporator fan if that was broken then your compressor would be cold, the fan inside the compressor section would be the condenser fan, if that was defective then your compressor would be hot causing the compressor to short cycle. change the fan and clean your condenser coil and your problem should be gone,

Hello,
That condenser fan motor needs to be replaced. You and doing the right thing as far as using a seperate fan to keep compressor cool, buy replacing the fan the compressor will run cooler and click off by being too hot as you have heard/seen.

Find your model number and call your local appliance parts store and see if they have a CONDERSER FAN MOTOR in stock

My magic refigerator/freezer condenser fan stops but when I move the fan blade it starts working and the refrigerator get cold again. Is it a bad fan unit or something else?

yes if you can barely touch blade and it stops the fan motor is bad. While replacing conderser fan motor be sure to clean dust from condenser coil. Then as regular maintiance clean coils twice per year.

Refrigerator gets extremely hot in the center strip on the doors. Is this is a condensor fan problem and if so can you give me an idea of how much it would cost to fix it?

This is normal. The refrigerant lines run through the center strip to reduce condensation buldup between the doors.
The temperature will vary and can be as high as 120 degrees F.
When the compressor cycles off it cools down.

Fan moves slowly ,compressor still hot even with a portable fan blowing on condensor ,but temps are back to normal. What would cause the fan to blow slowly and there is no obsructions

Ralph78yanks,
Your condenser fan (fan motor by compressor) is a variable speed and controlled by a computer board and compressor speed. If the fan motor slows down and the compressor is running in high, the unit can over heat and cause temperature issues in refrigerator sections. GE has a program which can see actual fan RPMs of motor. As I research this incomplete model number (7 possible different models) I see they all use the same fan motor Part# WR60X10209, this is a DC motor. Make sure you fan has not melted also. The heat from the compressor can melt the should or blade when this motor fails. I hope this information helps you..

This could be cause by several different problems. Here they are. Not enough R-134a freon. Severe frost behind back panel (inside freezer section) Conderser motor not running or running too slow to cool off compressor. Very dirty condenser. Excessive heat wll cause the compressor to over heat and warm up frig. It take about an hour for it to cool off and come back on. if you find out this problem let me know

Slow condenser and evaporator fans on SDL20KCSABS

Newer GE refrigerators use variable speed DC fan motors to improve energy efficiency. Fan speed is determined by the electronic control board. Your refrig is working as designed.
Please don't rate solution, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my overall score. Thanks.
