First, check if your vga card does have a sli-capable(it's a feature for hdtv compatibility) chip once you've found out that it has that technology, you'll need a dvi cord usually included in the box when you bought a vga card it's a circle-shaped with small holes in it then plug it in the dvi slot found in vga card then to your hdtv i'm not sure where can you insert it see the instructions of your tv

Hook vga cord to hdtv and optiplex desk top get

Try a different display setting, for example, 1280 x 800 or 1024 x 768. Once you can see (computer) display, then move onto the best resolution which your display card support for your HDTV. Good luck..

(btw, if your dell has two vga sockets, get another vga cable. Then set your computer to a dual display mode, one for your computer and the other for HDTV. this way you will never lose your display.)
