Hi, I'm not sure if I've completely understood your problem...but it sounds as though you have to press " on the keyboard to get @ onscreen, and @ on the keyboard to get " onscreen . Is that right?

If so, your keyboard may not be set up properly for your country.

Try going to Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language settings. Make sure all the settings shown are correct for your country. On the Languages tab, click 'Details' to ensure the language and details settings shown here are also correct for your country.

If this solution is not detailed enough, search windows help on your computer for 'keyboard regional settings' . Of course, if any of this does not solve your problem, please come back to Fixya. :)

Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion dm4 two months ago and it seems that it doesn't contain a number lock key. I was wondering if there is a way to insert special characters without going to symbols and copy...

If you were to click on start then All programmes. Select Accessories and then character map.
Select a font and then the code you require.
I find since WinXP Alt0189 no longer works properly and use the character map instead.
Hope that helps.

Hi, I was given a Dell Inspirion 1720 laptop as a gift . The problem is that there is a password on it and we dont know what it is

Boot in safe mode (tap Delete key or F1 key or the specified key on the screen, when its booting). If it lets you log in as administrator without password, its done. Go to user accounts and create a new one for you. But if it doesn't work, you need to reinstall the OS using the recovery disk that comes with laptop. If you dont have any disk, buy the Windows OS disk from market. You can download the hardware drivers from Dell's website.

Either you bring down the slide button on the right side by holding the left click button on the touch pad and then slide the cursor all the way down by using the touch pad OR Press the Pg down key to reach the bottom of the page.

Dell D600 Latitude laptop. Spanish characters when using ALT key and a # do not work. Suggestion?

Go to Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on Character Map. You will need to do a cut and paste of the character from there. Laptop keypads don't support the Alt# sequence for inserting characters like a conventional keyboard does.

I just need to know how to use the diacritic/accent mark key on my Aspire 5610 keyboard.

Hi,

I'll be glad to help you out with this. Assuming you have XP, you have 2 choices. Either use the Character Map, or an ALT code.

To access the character map, click

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map

An ALT code is simply when you hold down the ALT key and press a series of numbers on the keypad to get different symbols. Here's a list of ALT Codes:

Hope this helped :)

ALT Codes

I'm a little late to the game, but...
I share James's frustration. Seems like a dumb thing for Dell to economize on. Here's my workaround, for what it's worth.
  1. Open the Windows on-screen keyboard (osk.exe). And, for later ease of use, pin it to your taskbar. (Detailed instructions: click on the Windows start button, type osk.exe in the search box, right-click on the program, select Pin to Taskbar.)
  2. On the virtual keyboard, open Options and select "Turn on the numeric keypad." After saving the setting, press the NumLock button.
  3. Here's the tricky bit: press and hold Alt on your physical keyboard, and then press and hold Fn, again on your physical keyboard. You're holding them both down, right? Keep doing it. Now enter your four-digit code on the virtual (on-screen) keyboard. Release the physical keys. You should have your special character.
Hope it works for you.
