Cd drive doesn't see sims 2 double deluxe

I installed "The Sims 2 Double Deluxe" on my PC. My operating system is XP. I have 2 @ 3GHz CPUs, 1, 6Gb RAM, disc drive 8x or faster CD/DVD drive, plenty of free space and a Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro graphics card. Once I found out how much space it took up (4.5 GB) I uninstalled it.
Since then I have changed my mind and have tried to reinstall the game, but to no avail. My CD/DVD drive does not respond upon inserting the sims 2 game. The light of my drive comes on and even after waiting for more than 15 minutes still no logo or any information. Right clicking on the drive doesn't work either. When I insert the bonus cd I have no problem; all works fine, just the sims 2 cd gives the problem.
