I've tried changing a few settings as suggested by Microsoft message boards but nothing I have done will get it to turn on. I am using Vista 64 bit
Windows Defender is old and not supported the way it use to be, the security essentials has taken over that role and is free to all genuine window owners.

Ummmm. Its quite expensive to do that but i suppose if you need to ten its a viable option. You could buy a cheap 32 bit machine instead or try downgrading vista.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx This may help you if you retail bought the machine.

You will need to change your default audio output from analog to digital.
Double-click on on the little volume icon in the system tray (lower-right corner), to select which source you want to output your audio.

Have you checked the settings of your synaptics? Usually there's an Icon on the taskbar for synaptics you can right click it and check if "disable touchpad if usb pointing device is present" is checked, if so uncheck it then your touch pad should work again.
